ti 99/4a game ... need help to remember the name...

Recommended Posts

Anyone remember a game for this system where you were a mountain climber and you had to defeat a abonibal snowman /bigfoot-ish monster?

Everything was white with snow and the white snow beast at the type was kind of like Donkey Kong I suppose.

You had to use a Grappling hook (or rope?) to climb from ledge to ledge.

I've looked on Google to try to find lists, but nothing pops out.

There is a game called Alpiner that definitely is not it.

There is a game called Bigfoot, but there are no screenshots and the creature was really like the Abonibal Snowman...

HELP !

I just remembered that the monster threw boulders at you to avoid.

nope.

Everything was WAY smaller, and the graphice (from what I remember) were pretty impressive.

Everything was on one screen, like Donkey Kong.

Here is the description from DigitalPress.

Licensed from Milton Bradley. Although the Bigfoot theme is pretty worn-out, even for 1983 (Donkey Kong, Lode Runner et al) the game plays well. Bigfoot is part of the Milton Bradley “Arcade Plus” series for the TI-99/4A. While it was an extremely high-priced cartridge when initially released, it became more affordable after TI’s departure from the home computer market. Even so, it didn’t hit rock bottom in price until the early 90's, when it could be purchased for as little as $1.00 (yep, a buck)! Unfortunately, it is no longer available on the retail front. At least not any place that we’ve been able to locate. Released 11/83.

Sounds like it may be the one you are looking for but again there were no screenshots. :(

Bigfoot has a white mountain shape on a blue background, and there are platforms going up the mountain, and little gift looking boxes scattered on them. You have to use a grappling hook to climb up to other levels, and you have to dodge snowballs/boulders thrown by Bigfoot at the top of the mountain. All in all, it's a good platformer, and far superior to Alpiner. I never had a Milton Bradley Expansion System, so I could never try it out with voice recognition, or the cool three button pistolgrip joystick. Those would make it play even better.

Here's a screen shot of Bigfoot, it's not from an emulator though so the screen shot is not as clear as it would be from emulation. Thanks to Rob Patton for this screen shot!

THAT'S IT ! ! ! ! ! :D :D :D :D :D :D

God I loved that game.

Something tells me I may never find a copy of it.

Good reason to add a TI to my console collection. That was my first computer. I was an 11 year old pro at BASIC and would

make text adventures for my younger brother all the time.

(Loaded by cassette tape of course...)

That was my only game for the system, but it blew the graphics of my 2600 away, so I played it non-stop.

Thanks to everyone who helped out.

Oh!

It does look like a game I would have enjoyed back in the 80's! It was all about the Donkey Kong-style platformers back then!

I must try this!

It has that lode runner / miner 2049er feel to it too.

(If I remember right)

It had DK elements but was more of a puzzle game as well.

As the levels went on, the puzzles of how to get to the top got tougher.

I remember loving the sound effects and the grapling hook was very fun and a unique idea.

If I remember right, you had to get all the gifts and the piles of gold before moving on.

And that nest back in the background reminds me that there may have been a bird that attacks?

If anyone knows of where I can get a copy of this... or knows where I can get a TI99 emulator, that would be great.

If I remember right, you had to get all the gifts and the piles of gold before moving on.

Yes, the idea was that you first had to get the gifts and then the gold would glow. Once the gold glowed you could then pick one pile up. So you had to be sure to get gift-gold in that order.

And that nest back in the background reminds me that there may have been a bird that attacks?

In the later levels, there are some birds that will actually take your climbing rope away (even if you are on it!). So this could leave you with no way back down if you need to go that way, or you could be carried away by the birds and eventually dropped to your death. If you have the MBX system, the speech synthesis is much better on it for all the games (it had a more advanced speech chip than TI's own). You've got to love the MBX speech in Bigfoot: Bigfoot growls realistically and also when the guy is being carried away by the birds he says "Put me down!", and of course the birds put him down :), then he goes "Whooooa!" (the voice fades as he falls off the screen). But of course you must have the MBX to really get the best speech for this game. Go to eBay and do a search for "MBX ti-99", I know there was a past auction there for a system a a fun games (forget if Bigfoot was one). Maybe you can talk the winner of the auction into selling it to you. It only went for $75 which is cheap considering it was an MBX unit with carts! Usually they go for $150+ on eBay

As to Tombstone City, I remember it and that catchy tune that would play! :) I can still hear it now. I used to play that game in my "early" TI days, meaning pre-1983. I used to sit there and actually try to see if I could block myself inside the blue base with cactusus :)
