memorymoog #1 Posted October 24, 2001 Does anyone else think this game is totally overrated? maybe if i had teh instruction manual i could tolerate it. Its boring, the graphics are crude and primitive, and the control is wonky. This game is a C - game at best.
Tempest #2 Posted October 24, 2001 I think it's pretty fun, but only for short spurts at a time. I can't really play it for more than 20 mintues or so before I start getting frustrated (with the jumping more than anything). I'd rate it a B+ Tempest
Albert #3 Posted October 24, 2001 I also rather like Mountain King and think it's a pretty unique game, certainly better a C- in my book. I'd give it a rating in the B range. I also like the music, especially on the 5200 version. I'm a sucker for games with catchy music. ..Al
Ze_ro #4 Posted October 24, 2001 I happen to love this game! It's right up there with Pitfall 2 in my opinion. Yes, it's hard, and it's a little slow... but once you get into it, it's quite engrossing. Unfortunately, this thread was doubled up, so I'll address Stan from this thread, and hope the other one dies off: The flashlight is damn important, and the game doesn't really work without it. Not only do you use it to find the bale (even though you can see it flash), but there's also a bunch of hidden treasures that you can't see unless you shine the flashlight at them. They're worth quite a bit of points, so it's worthwhile to shine the flashlight around a bit and try to find them. I don't like up for jump in any game (Zool 2 for Jaguar is the worst as far as this goes), but as long as you don't have a crappy joystick, it's not so bad. --Zero
woodyi76 #5 Posted October 24, 2001 I agree mountian king is overrated. The graphics are about as ugly as a game could be. The game play is boring (I'm not a big fan of ladder games) although fast eddie is pretty cool. I would rate this game a D. I know gameplay is what it's all about but I get nightmares over these graphics. yuck.
StanJr #6 Posted October 24, 2001 Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of hidden treasure being revealed with the flashlight and all, but I have been killed by the damn Spider or have had the crown stolen by a bat so many times because of my inability to jump, it makes me absolutely NUTS! I wish there was a way to compromise. I like the game a lot, but its hard for me to play well. Run on sentence, Stan
davidbrit2 #7 Posted October 24, 2001 I would have to agree that the gameplay scores about a 10 on the annoying meter. "Okay, I've got enough pieces of gold after five minutes of falling off ledges because of the controls. Now I have to get to the crown. That should only take another five minutes, provided I don't get eaten by the spider like monster. Okay, I've got the crown, now if I can just make it back up. Climb, climb, fall, climb, fall, fall, climb, climb, climb, fall, fall . . . Oh bugger! The bat took the crown! Back to the beginning." It's not a fun game to try and beat, but putzing around in the "secret world" is what earned the game most of its merits. Plus, it's rather impressive from a technical point of view. Ze_ro #8 Posted October 25, 2001 Am I the only one that doesn't think this game is overly difficult? I mean: - The spider is only on the bottom level of the maze (which can be completely avoided), and won't kill you immediately anyways (shake the joystick to escape it's webbing). - The jumping is a little weird, but the only real problem I've ever had with it is hitting ceilings and such... and even when you do, it doesn't cost you that much time really. - If you have trouble gathering all the diamonds, look for secret treasure chests... they're worth quite a bit, and will get you to the 1000 point mark much faster. I agree this part of the game is a little slow and monotonous... but it gets a lot more interesting afterwards. - Okay, so the bats are really annoying. I agree with you there. Remember though that you can duck! I couldn't manage to beat the first level until I figured this out. As long as you're careful not to run down long tunnels, you shouldn't have too much trouble... but don't be surprised if you can't get the crown the first 2 or 3 times. I actually like that this game takes so long... it keeps my interest for longer than a lot of the games the Atari has (My attention span is so low that it has to be measured in microseconds). You really have to play it enough to get into the game before it gets fun I think... when you first start, it's a little overwhelming. That's not to say that everyone will like it, but give it another chance and you might change your mind. Am I the only one who thinks this game is awesome? C'mon guys, back me up here! --Zero
StanJr #9 Posted October 25, 2001 Yeah, but even if I duck, 50% of the time that mother-scratchin' bat still makes off with the crown. After two or three failed attempts, I have to go lie down. I do think it is fun and a great game, but it is hard for me.
moycon #10 Posted October 25, 2001 I like it. The music !!!rocks!!! especially when the bass kicks in. I wouldnt compare it to Pitfall 2 tho. I havent played in awhile but I do remember the jumping would get annoying... From what I remember...For some reason you fall down (like if you walk off a platform or jump and hit your head) and have to get back up which takes a few seconds and kind of ruins the pace of the game a bit. That can get annoying. But other than that once the pressure is on to get to the top...!!!WOOHOO!!! I can remember a jump I used to to that would take me all the way up the side of the mountain you had to get to...That really cut down on the time to get to the top. I'd give it a B+
Thomas Jentzsch #11 Posted October 25, 2001 Sure, it's a hard game, but it's not unfair. I just requires a bit more training and I like the challenge. There are some hundred easier games for the 2600, many of them are maybe to easy for me, but I won't blame them. So, if this game is to hard for some of you, maybe it's not the games fault... Just remember how long you needed to figure out how to jump over the Pitfall! crocos in one move. Mountain King get's an A- from me. BTW: If you think Mountain King is to frustrating, what about Thrust? Did any of you try Thrust and found it to hard or frustrating too?
+Cafeman #12 Posted October 25, 2001 The terminology "mother-scratchin bat" gets an A- from me. I'll have to try out Mountain King again, can't recall ...
StanJr #13 Posted October 25, 2001 Just an "A-"? That's not on a curve is it? I must try harder next time....
