Atari Flashback Unit

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd note that this unit is now being advertised on best buy's web page.

49.99... I thought it had a suggested retail of 44.99

I guess Best Buys didnt take the suggestion.

My gripe is that for the price of this thing, you can get a used 2600. So why not fit a cart port into it and at least make the thing more attractive? I think I'll be sticking with my video-modded 2600, thank you.

Since "Best Buy" is still listing for sale subscriptions to Current Notes, which, as far as I know, ceased to exist in 1996, it's probably not to best to take their Atari listings at face value. ;)

Question: Since WAACE no longer exists, exactly who is authorizing that 5% discount? :ponder:

Hi Joe,

What happened to this thing?  Did it ever come out?  I would think it would have been out for the holiday season.

Indeed, it has come out and there are several active threads discussing it already. Here are some links:

Got a Flashback unit!

The "Flashback Thread" that hasn't become a pee pe

The "Flame Free" Flashback Thread

Unfortunately there's a lot of arguing in some of those threads, but also good information if you look past that.

Yes they are available now. I saw a big stack of them in Best Buy just a few minutes ago. I plan to buy one, but not for what they're asking for thme right now. I expect a pretty large price drop after xmas.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

In case anyone missed the other thread also titled "Atari Flashback Unit", that big price drop has already happened.... they're $30 this week at Best Buy.

I think the 1983 of N-in-1 units is upon us....

I think you're right ... but I hope some good ones survive. The Space Invaders, Ms. Pac-Man, and dare I say it, the Jakks Atari stick are all decent for what they are.

Best Buy's is a good sale price, but the Flashback is barely worth half that.

At the Best Buy near me - around Thanksgiving they had a few 'stacks' of these in the store - Last week it appeared most of them had sold (or they moved the stacks in the back)

The Flashcrap is more worthless than turd on a stick. I find more uses for turd on a stick than this useless piece of plastic. The emulation is so bad the games are WORSE than the originals. I wish there was a word that meant more useless than useless.

Why ANYONE who inhabits these forums would want one is beyond me. For casual thirty-something non-gamers who have no clue about classic games just MIGHT enjoy it (maybe for 5 minutes). Its that bad folks. I took mine back within a day back when it first came out.

Target has these things for sale this week @ $27.88 or thereabouts.

Froogle shows nothing for "turd on a stick" so the Flashback might be the next best thing if you're in the market for one of those.

The Best Buy and Target near me seem to have kajillions of these all stacked up. I might get one to rip apart the cute little joysticks if the price dips below $10. :ponder:

I'd say turd on a stick gets your point across. :)

Else more useless than useless = most useless?

It's really ashame about this thing. It's sickening thinking of all the kids with this and their other TV Game POS's and not playing the games they way they really were back in the day.

Saw my first Flashback today at Wal*Mart. They wanted $39 for it. Jeez...

What was even stranger is they had stacks and stacks of this new Frogger unit that just had arcade Frogger for $20. :o

Although they did have the Ms. Pac-Man (and all the other Namco games in one) on a WIRELESS unit now. If I didn't already have those games on so many other platforms, I might have bit on that one. WIRELESS! Who would have thunk it!

Re: Walmart...

If you look in the clearance section (at least around us) you can find the 2 player paddle controllers w/ 13 built in games marked for 25$. The games are - super breakout, casino, warlords, demons to diamonds, circus atari, breakout, pong, night driver, arcade warlords, street racer, steeple chase, video olympics and canyon bomber.

At one Walmart we price checked them and they came up 17$ but at the one closest to our house they rang up for 10$. Needless to say we picked up a set for 10$. They also had the 1 player 1 paddle versions which rang up at 8.75 and 11$ respectively.

They also had just one plug and play 5 in 1 space invaders controller for either right or left handed people. It included sapce invaders, phoenix, lunar rescue, qix and colony 7. That one was unmarked but rang up for only 5$.

I was told that Walmart clearance as well as some regular prices depend on the store management and depending on supply and demand they can pretty much do what they want. It is irritating in such a large chain to think that you don't even know if the store 15 minutes away will have stuff at the same price. Very glad we kept looking.
