King Atari
The games released from 1977 to 1981 are the earliest games on the system (everything before the silver label period). My picks for best: "Superman" and "Night Driver". Worst: "Pac-Man" for sure. Post your picks here.
Jess Ragan
The best early Atari game? Adventure. The worst? Star Ship. I'd replace the "p" in the title with another letter if I could get away with it. JR
moycon
Yep I agree the best was Adventure. The worst had to be baseball...2nd only to football.
NE146
I think for the earliest VCS games, Video Olympics is up there. I mean cmon.. oodles of PONG all in one nifty little cartridge.. who needed a dedicated pong console anymore? I don't know.. but I've also kind of always have been partial to "Bowling". Circus Atari is another goodie as well as Indy500 (if you could afford the big box with the controllers) I liked Space Wars too.. but what was with that football-field-green background? This was supposed to be SPACE! My brother and I used to turn the brightness of our tv all the way down to get that blackness of space in there properly. oh who knows.. obviously I have problems picking a best... The worst? Basic Math and Slot Machine and some honors have to go to Starship
woodyi76
I like surround,Video Game Olympics,Circus Atari, Adventure, Space Invaders, Missile Command and SuperBreakout. I don't like Superman, Fishing Derby, and any game with too much flicker.

atarimastermarty
Yea, pac-man definately did suck.
Nateo
I dunno, I like playing Street Racer with my friends, and BlackJack is always fun.
Scooterb23
Ok, here is where I get slapped by the board. My favorite early era games have always been Circus Atari and Pac-Man My least favorite Atari game early, late, ever has ALWAYS been Adventure. I just never got into it... StanJr
HA! Good one scooterb23! You really had me going on that one! HA! You liked Pac-man but not Adventure! Hee! What a wicked sense of humor.... what? You weren't kidding? Really? Oh. You asked for it, Stan
Tempest
I've got a confession to make, I never really cared for Adventure either! I find it blocky, flickery, and glitchy. It was a great game back in 78, but it just doesn't do it for me anymore. Tempest
Ze_ro
I'm sure I'm the only person who'll say this, but I didn't think Star Ship was all that bad. Now, it wasn't great, and it'll never make any top ten lists, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's the worst. For best, I'd have to say Video Olympics. This one is still amung the top ten lists for me. Sure, it's not technically amazing, but four player mode is a total winner. I'd also have to put in a mention for Sky Diver... I've always liked this kind of game. As for worst... well, I've never liked sports games, so Football and Baseball were never my bag... Street Racer kinda sucked too... And we all know about Pacman... --Zero
Parcel
Off the top of my head, I think of Missile Command because of its creativity and overall well done game. Basic Math is the worst game simply because its purely educational.
+Cafeman
Hey guys, I was not a huge Adventure fan either. I mean, I liked the concept, but the flickering and invisible levels and that !@#$ bat always drove me away. Of course, I was a kid then, into action arcade games more. I think I appreciate Adventure more now. I also like the concept of Superman but could never play the game for long. I think my favorite early games were Combat (am I weird? We loved to play this game against each other!) and Missile Command.
NE146
quoteI think my favorite early games were Combat (am I weird? I thought the general consensus was that everybody liked Combat... unless you had no one to challenge in it.
Scooterb23
Yay! I'm not the only person in the world that doesn't like Adventure!! Yay!! And yes, I like Pac-Man, broke 300K again yesterday
liveinabin
Best - i'd say keystone kapers (no surprise there huh?) I do like Adventure though, I imagine - somewhere deep down in the basic code of Zelda 64 lurks adventure Worst - um - Air,Sea Battle was a naff half-brother to combat and Dodge-em now props the cartridges down in my NES. Joel D. Park
I've gotta say I love Adventure! I still think it's a great game. Also, I liked Pacman back in the day. I of course never play it now. But back in the day it was very cool.
Hakogame 箱亀
I must say that when I was younger, I loved Pacman and disliked Adventure, but now it's the other way around. Funny how your taste in games sometimes changes when you get older.
Cassidy Nolen
Still favs: Dodge Em (gets lots of play on game nights) Superman (as has been stated a million times) Combat (Dude, its combat, of course its cool. Shame I have about 3 billion copies...) Maze Craze (fun for a while) Still Sucks: Hangman (god I hate this game!) Codebreaker (eeew!) Graphics are not everything: Look at the Pac phenomena. VectorGamer
Best: Space Invaders Worst: 3D Tic-Tac-Toe
Gabriel
It's hard for me to call any of them the worst. I guess I'd say that I never see any reason to ever again use the Basic Programming cart, and there wasn't much of any merit to it when it was new either. For best, I'm going to go with Adventure. It's got some serious longevity.
JadeETC
Best: Missile Command Worst: Football
Lentzquest
Love the necro-bumps I'm surprised this thread doesn't have many votes for Berzerk in it. For me, Defender and Berzerk are the best of the early titles but there are a great many others that come close. For the bad there's Basic Math, Slot Machine, Space War, Basic Programming, Street Racer, etc. I know Pac-Man disappointed a lot of people, but it's phenomenal compared to many of the early games. I for one love it.
Armonigann
Geeez this is an old thread! Anyways, Best: Missle Command Worst: Basic Math
