Darth Vader Sound question

A friend of mine found his Darth Vader hiding in his parents attic. We cleaned it up, hooked it up and boy did we think we were in business. The picture is beautiful and the sound is... a problem. Yes we can hear sounds, but only half of them. For example in Asteroids we can hear the thrust and explosion sounds, but not the music or the fire sounds. In Frogger the opening music has only one voice- the melody- with no accompanyment. Same goes for Crystal Castles. All the games check out in my jr. Does this sound familiar to anyone here? Where should I start to troubleshoot? After a few minutes we started to hear the accompanyment on Frogger, but it was faint. Also, the power switch will need to be replaced as it is a little on the fritz.
