ussexplorer #1 Posted September 21, 2004 Well, I was in Wamart and they are stocking for christmas. With tons and tons of handhelp a/v classic and even new games. I added them up and figured I would least need 120.00 at about 20.00 a peice for eatch unit. So I decided to hit the walmart site and found even more stuff. I admit some of them I'll never purchase. Like snow board, sponge bob, disney and what not. But Atari, intellivison, and check out the arcade legends space invadors. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product_lis...430&sb=61&bti=0 laters, ussexplorer

Stingray #5 Posted September 23, 2004 It looks just like the arcade controls! I assume this was sarcasm, as it looks nothing at all like the arcade controls. Space Invaders doesn't even use a joystick, it uses a different style of buttons, and the artwork is completely different. -S
NE146 #6 Posted September 23, 2004 Space Invaders doesn't even use a joystick Yes it does. All original Taito Space Invaders machines used Joysticks. You're thinking of the U.S. made Midway licensed versions (which arguably had inferiour artwork/construction as well). But your point is taken
NE146 #7 Posted September 23, 2004 Forgot to include the Midway upright for comparison
Stingray #8 Posted September 23, 2004 I stand corrected on the joystick issue. Of course I was thinking of the Midway version, having never even seen a Taito machine in person. And I would argue that the Midway machines (both upright & cocktail models) were better looking, but of course that's only my opinion. In any case I'd think that most people in the US, where this device that Wal-Mart is flogging is primarily being marketed would be more familiar with the buttons only control on Space Invaders than the joystick. -S
NE146 #9 Posted September 23, 2004 Yeah was just showing you. But again you're right in that the tv-unit we're talking about above looks nothing like the arcade controls.. either of them! You really think the Midway version is nicer? Look at this sideart! And the Taito version is made even snazzier since it's vinyl too!
Stingray #10 Posted September 23, 2004 Well again, I guess it's just what you're used to. When I think Space Invaders, I think of those big-ole stenciled monsters. But then again, I'm pretty fond of my Space invaders cocktail: Which doesn't have the monsters on it anywhere. Nor does it have a joystick or left/right buttons (it uses an odd lever control for base movement). I guess this is one game that had quite a few variations both in controller setup and in overall cabinet looks. But I stand by my original point in that the system we're discussing uses controls that look like none of the arcade varieties. -S
NE146 #11 Posted September 23, 2004 But I stand by my original point in that the system we're discussing uses controls that look like none of the arcade varieties. Agreed upon earlier you're right in that the tv-unit we're talking about above looks nothing like the arcade controls.. either of them! Yeah you got the U.S. 'lever" controlled cocktail. Those are actually harder to find I think than the original Taito cocktails... which probably number in the gazillions (I remember whole arcade rooms filled with nothing but them). Also too the recent Space Invaders 25th Anniversary collection for the Playstation 2 came out with a commerative controller that was shaped like the cocktail.. 'course it was the Taito version though.
