Emulation on Nintendo DS & Sony PSP

Recommended Posts

Maybe someone here can educate a non-technically savvy person like me about the possibilites for emulation on these two systems.

For example, if I knew that Mame could be ported to either one of them it would dramatically increase the likelihood that I would buy one. My Gp32 has been great for Nintendo and Commodore 64 games, but I've never been able to get the Mame emulator for that system to work right.

It should be possible. If the Game Boy Advance can handle emulation, surely the more powerful Nintendo DS and Sony PSP could, as well. However, it could be tough writing games that will be compatible with the PSP's proprietary disc format. There are rumors that it will be able to download files from the PS2, so that could easily address that problem.

Since the DS uses a solid state cartridge format, it won't be long before a Hong Kong company creates a flash cart similar to what's already available for the Game Boy Advance.

Flashcarts already exist for it, they are just made by the big N at the moment. :D

Yes, the flashcards is only for the game developers (game testing) though. like they did w/ the GBA.

I dont like touch screens myself because

1. You are usually have to use a plastic pen thingy

2. You usually use it even if it has a nice place to put it *cough game.com*

3. You arent forced to use them you dont

4. They get messy if you loose the pen and use your fingure

Yeah they are little things but simpler things = less things that can go

wrong

I already heard that the DS is backward compatable with the GBA but not the GB so it should be no problem. As far as the PSP goes all someone has to do is write an emulator for it.

We come back to the issue of Sony's very proprietary media. How would you get an emulator onto the system? A cartridge or flash card is much easier to deal with.

I can see the Flash Cart's for the GBA working on a DS. But they would have to create a brand new kind for the DS part. Especially to take advantage of the touch screen, or the double screen function. A few arcade games use two screens. This is like wow. Made for emulation!

Of course, they'll still all be PC only and of no use to me.

a possibility is replacing the system bios eprom to read unsigned code as you do with the xbox for emulation. but that eprom will likely be tiny with the psp. however if you could get around this emulation would be IDEAL on the psp over the ds given its specs and larger screen size.
