Burnout 3 - the impossible track?

Recommended Posts

Been playing Burnout 3 for the last week or so, enjoying it lots, apart from the computers horrible cheating. Aaaanyway.. I just need to see if any other B3 players have completed the Special Race on Lakeside Getaway (one of the tracks where you race with that Formula 1 type car).

I've been trying everything I can but I cannot, on any of the races, get any better than 5th. It's pissing me off. Any suggestions?

Hmm...cheating CPU you say?

I was looking at picking Burnout 3 up (along with Colin McRae 05 on Sept 28), but I'm not a big fan of racers with bad AI.

Since I haven't played the previous Burnout games, I'm wondering how does it cheat? Rubberband AI? Superhuman-like abilities?

I can't drive for more than three seconds without crashing the formula-1 car. It's just too fast to control. And yeah I have'nt seen a game cheat this bad in a LONG time. You can take out another car, immediately get on the boost and drive flawlessy, but the CPU will be bumping your car from behind in about 3 to 4 seconds. However if you get taken out it takes at least a half a lap if not longer to just catch back up to the CPU drivers.

Ick...that sort of CPU AI is something I really detest.

Perhaps I'll steer clear of Burnout 3 in that case.

Yeah, it's rubberband AI. Which is, generally, fair enough as this is an arcade racer. However, unlike Ridge Racer, which doesn't even pretent to be accurate, this seems to be caught between trying to accurately portray a bunch of other human players all wanting to win as badly as you do (and they ARE clever, they know just when to rear end you) and familiar arcade 'time attack marker' racers.

Shame really. Still, testament to how completely awesome this game is that I'm still playing it every second I can spare. I still heartily recommend it, but the reviews have been hyped. Everyone should own at least one Burnout game, they're a genre in themselves.

Adrian, DO pick it up. Ignore my protests, I'm just a sore loser :)

It's a whole pile of fun.

Anyway, I just want the novelty of recommending an Xbox game to you :D ;)

I think the most fun of this game comes from the Crash Mode. Hands down. I really despise having to pick up those STUPID little icons though just to get a Gold Medal.

Brother has gold in all races, so it can't be that difficult. He's just got some crash junctions to get gold in (has silver instead).

I picked this up the day it came out and I've already unlocked ALL 100 of the crash junctions. I also have gotten gold in all of them too :D I actually prefer the Road Rage mode over Crash mode as it's a whole lot of fun. It does not take me half a lap to catch up either if I get taken out. I usually still have stuff left on the Burnout meter though, so I'm able to catch up fairly quickly. The thing I'm having trouble with are some of those Time Attack tracks. I just cannot get gold on a couple of them no matter how hard I try. I did look at the hint book for a few tracks and it says you have to pretty much get through them without crashing once or you will not make it to gold. That Formula racer is sure fast and a little tough to get used to, but I can manage to drive it for awhile without crashing. If you have to drive it on a course with a lot of curves though, you're pretty much screwed! :P Anyway, I recommend EVERYONE picks this game up. It's really amazing and very fun to play!! Oh yeah, I also have gotten all 10 crash headlines as well, and that unlocks the Firetruck

Which brings us neatly back to the Lakeside Getaway track. The problem here is that because this car is overpowered with horrible understeer, forcing you to powerslide round the huge corners (which is suicide as the enemy AI goes straight for you) into the busy traffic that your steering can't handle... YOU WILL CRASH.

Normally not a problem, but for the cheating. You're with the pack, you have a scrape, before you know it you're 12 seconds behind. Bullshit.

I'd truly love to finish this one GP so that I can never have to play it again. A blot on an otherwise fun game.

Road Rage mode it's easy to catch back up because there are cars to takeout all over the place. Catching back up in a GP race or a standard 5 car race is pretty tough, especially when you bite it your boost meter drops in size making it even more difficult to keep pace. And yeah the firetruck rules. The crashbreaker from that thing takes out damn near the entire area :D

I found this game extremely easy in spots and damn near impossible at others... very frustrating. To call this a racing game is a stretch tho. It is more like a boxing match on wheels. I absolutely HATE the AI and the physics. It is sooo bad at times that I can't believe I am wasting my time playing this. The controls are so simple.... throttle, brake and boost. It is a simple game for the less cerebral folks.

So given all that I've stated, I keep coming back to this game. WHY? I dunno. It is like crack. The game is soo damn addictive. If I had XBOX Live, I think I would love to spar with other "drivers" on-line. I tried linking to XBOX's together, but it wouldn't allow multiplayer racing

Personally, I still favor the first installment of the series as it actually has the best arcade racing experience. B2 started to diverge form the formula and B3 is not even the same game as the previous 2. Each installment is actually different enough that each one basically stands on their own as a unique game. Playing Burnout vs B2 vs B3 are all totally different game experiences.

Just my thoughts,

-Lee

Oh right, I've never heard any good press from Burnout 1. I started at 2 (which I love dearly) and always figured that it had completely superceded 1. Hmmm....it's very cheap now, I might have a look at that, thanks :)

You, like me are a big arcade racing fan. I think you will enjoy Burnout. It has more racing elements in it and less "car boxing" elements.

Not to mention that it's the hardest of the three to master. :ponder: IMO

OK, I'll have a go at it.

Oh yeah, I took Burnout 3 online yesterday. Bloody hell, there are some good players in the world. Lots of fun, though, even though I don't yet have the headset (so I have to sit in silence as another drunk player goes 'Live in a bin. Hur Hur.. that's funny' )

The online road rage is nothing short of excellent. Blue Team, Red Team. Blue team has to cross the finish line alive, Red team has to take 'em down!

Pretty much my thoughts as well that I have been explaining to people since B3's release, having played B1 and B2 to death.

i second that, in fact i've just swaped my PS2 copy of BurOut 1 for it on the X-Box version just to do it all again but with better graphics.

the trick with most of the races is not to boost when in first place, as if you do the other cars just happen to 'catch-up'....

still not finished the game; i don't think i'll get more over my 97% for a while realy

Yes, once you are ahead, you have to keep your boost until they catch up again so you can get ahead, make them crash or recover if you get nailed.
