Classic Light Gun Games.... All Consoles

Recommended Posts

I really like a good light gun game, but my only light gun is the one for my MAME. I'm wondering if I'm missing out on any really fun stuff.

Consoles I Have:

2600

5200

About to get a 7800

Jaguar

Snes

Genesis/CD/32x

N64

Any opinions/suggestions/summary reviews?

My suggestion is to get yourself a Playstation 1 and a decent lightgun, then get all the Point Blank games. You'll never want for lightgun entertainment again.

For the 7800, there's Alien Brigade, which is pretty fun, albeit not all that long. And also Crossbow and Meltdown. Barnyard Blaster is not tremendously fun, so only get it if you can find it dirt cheap. I won't even mention Sentinel, since it wasn't released in North America. It'll only work on PAL 7800s. Same thing with the 2600 version.

I like Time Crisis 3 & Dino Stalker for the GunCon2 (PS2). Got all 3 for $20.

Vampire Night is supposed to be good too, w/ Resident Evil: Dead Aim & Ninja Assault somewhat less so.

No gun exists(ed) for the Jaguar commercially.

I rather like SNK's Mechanised Attack for the NES and Gumshoe is about the most unique gun game I've played. Sort of a light gun platformer if you will

I really like the early lightgun games, especially the ones on the SMS. I have about 6 different gun carts that are all fun.

Thats why I like sony a lot because they have a descent amount of lightgun games and a large variety of all the genres too.

The 2600 version of Sentinel is NTSC. Now there is a NTSC version of Sentinel for the 7800.

2600 Shooting Arcade is alot of fun too!

There are light gun games for the Atari 8-bit computers too.

On a related note: There are light pen games for the Vectrex.

Point Blank is a very fun game for the PS and I do recommend it as well as the sequels.

Lethal Enforcers was fun. However, beware of Mad Dog McCree. That game isn't very good.

Good old Duck Hunt for the NES is good and so is Gotcha (a paintball type game), Barker Bill's Trick Shooting, and To the Earth. There's also the platformer, the Adventures of Bayou Billy. In addition to side scrolling action levels, there are also driving stages where you drive a car and shooting stages that you can use either the Zapper or the control pad for.

funny- I was thinking there wasnt enough of them! Guess that makes for easy collecting.

Which games can you use dual Guncon2s on? I read a review where the guy used two on Vampire Night. It wouldnt be feasible in Dino Stalker. The Time Crisis 3 manual doesnt mention it; I think it goes into split-screen 2-player mode automatically.

As with most SMS games, their shooter games are simplistic, short game affairs. I would say shorter than the NES ones. Safari Hunt, Trap Shooting,

Marksman Shooting all suffer from this. Wanted and Rescue Mission have better graphics/sound and are more interesting. Missile Defense 3D is a must play just because it uses both the light gun and the 3D glasses.

For NES I would say Konami's Adventures of Bayou Billy, and of course, Nintendo's own line of shooter games. Doesn't MAME play some of those? Freedom Force is difficult but worth checking out. "To The Earth" however is really bad because of its impossible difficulty.

For Dreamcast the ones to play are House of the Dead 2, Confidential Misssion and Virtua Cop 2 (included in SEGA's Smash Pack). Death Crimson OX (and part 2) are OK but not great. Make sure you bring a friend to play these!

Sounds like I may have a playstation in my near future :)

I think I'll get guns for my snes & genesis in the meantime though.

Thanks for all the input.

Starsky & Hutch on X-Box (and soon on PS2) has light gun support, one person drives around and the other player shoots stuff on the screen.

The Virtua Cop series on Saturn is good also. (Was supposed to be out on PS2 about a year ago but no current word on it).

The Time Crisis 3 on PS2 is Split screen or Dual system/dual screen support for 2 players.

The shooting stage of Die Hard Trilogy on PS was pretty good.

Stay away from Judge Dredd on PS. REALLY BAD!!!!

The original NES had some great shooting games, Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, and of course Wild Gunman. Not to mention a couple of bad ones, Action Paintball, and of course Laser Invasion with the helmet guns. (which I have 2 of) But if you're looking for a more realistic type of kill the bad guys game, I recommend Virtua Cop 1 & 2 for Sega Saturn!!!

I second the notion to get Time Crisis III and a GunCon2 (should come packed together). I got mine from my friend for only $15.

I cant recall any but Playstation2 has obviously the most lightgun games, Xbox has 2 and Gamecube 0 (in the US anyways)
Um did you forget about house of the dead 3 and silent scope for x-box? Any way i always thought that sega systems had the best light gun games. The saturn had the first 2 virtua cop games and house of the dead. The dream cast had some good one to like house of the dead 2 (which is probably the best light gun game ever made). Im not to sure about those uber old consoles tho.

My favorite light gun games!

NES = Wild Gunman

Saturn = Virtua Cop 2

PS1 = Time Crisis 1 (but go ahead and get all the Point Blank games you can find, along with Time Crisis: Project Titan. All the namco gun games are great.)

PS2 = Time Crisis 2 (also get Time Crisis 3 and Ninja Assault. Time Crisis: Crisis Mission will hopefully come out sometime in the near future)

Theres only 1 console gun game i have on the list of consoles ur asking about,, Crossbow on the 7800 is pretty good stuff. If you think of venturing into other consoles i'd recomend the following

PSX, Point blank 1,2 and to a degree 3

Saturn, virtual cop 1 & 2, kickass gunning

DC - house of the dead 2, loads of fun

SMS, operation wolf, excellent conversion.
