sequels

Recommended Posts

Commentators are picking up on this more and more. The game industry is differant to all other forms of entertainment. in this respect and its a problem.

A talented person can take a £1000 video camera and on a budget of £50,000 make a cinema-worthy indipendant film - the same is true for musicians, but with even lower costs to worry about. Youve got jack-shit chance of producing a commercially viable video game for £50,000, even on a mobile phone I bet.

Publishers are greedy and as that article says, they dont want to take risks with a new franchise.

Luckily, there are still developers around with with the impetus and ability to launch new franchises, albeit in overcrowded genre's, Hollenshead was interviewed recently and said that one of id's current projects is to launch a new franchise probably in 2006.

I'm not a sequle person. I can't stand when a sequle uses the same exact graphics and gameplay, just remixing the old characters and graphics.

When I read some snipets about what game developers had to say about the DS, most of them said "I don't know how I'd use the DS's 2nd screen in franchise X." These talented producers are tethered to the series they've carved out and can only work on sequels. It's dissapointing because I don't see a lot of innovative new games for the DS in the future.

You have to blame a little bit on consumers IMO. When a good original game comes out (Beyond Good and Evil) no one buys it. The people making the games will stop producing the same old shit year after year when people stop buying it. Be picky people, it makes the gaming industry a better place.

For what it's worth, I bought Cubivore.

I shall eat their meat and grow! Wrar! But first I must find my Consume-ate and be reborn... for great wilderness to be restored to the world. [/i]

I'm surprised Pikmin got a sequel. I mean it's so different. It's exactly the kind of game that doesn't get sequels in this day and age. (Glad it did get one, though. That was a miracle.)

I'm the kind of person who will welcome a sequel if I really liked the game and want more. Max Payne was one. I loved the first, loved the second just as much.

Mario 64 was great. Mario Sunshine was good, not as ground breaking, hella difficult and cheesy in most respoects. But it was still good. I enjoyed every (Almost) minute of it.

Crazy Taxi was a terrific game, and even though the second was nothing more than new drivers, new locations and a couple extra functions, it was still the same old fun CT fun. CT3 is the best.

Some games I want to see sequels to...

Beyond Good and Evil -- This one's a toughie. They originally WANTED to make sequels, but because the stupid ass players ut there were busy buying up other sequels to other games, no one noticed it. But let's all pray one day it happens. Even if it's only one sequel instead of two like was planned. Keep fingers crossed. I know I'd buy it at full price.

Vexx -- I know.. sad. Acclaim is gone. People hated Acclaim, but I LOVED Vexx. And I really really want a sequel to it. Even if it's the same game with new locations and functions. The scenery in the first was ingeniously designed. it had style. It had a feel. It did have a lot of really tough areas. But it was beautifully created. You could tell a lot of heart (No pun intended) put into the design and it'd be a shame not to see a new game with the Vexx name.

Animal Crossing -- Well, sorta. It kinda is getting one on the DS, but is that a sequel or a port?

Max Payne (Again) -- A rumored third installment is in the works, and I will welcome it with open arms. If it becomes reality.

Fable -- No question.

Conker -- Not a Deathmatch, not a remake (Though I am looking forward to the remake (Reloaded) part of that game. But a real sequel would do too.

Banjo-Kazooie -- Seems odd that Rare was only bought by MS to make Ghoulies and a remake of Conker. They GOTTA make a new BK. Hell, I'll settle for a Conker-esque BK/BT redo.

Perfect Dark -- Sad we still haven't seen this yet.

Great...more characters to drag through the sewer of South Park-type humor. Sigh.

No, no no. I don't mean Make BK like Conker. I mean redo the graphics engine like Conker is getting. Duh!
