Stella+KDE #1 Posted October 5, 2004 I miss being able to get a 3 level shareware game for $5.00, i used to love the fact i could go to a compter store or even a dillions grocery store and get these kinds of games. shoot i even miss the old BBS that they had setup at Apogee and Id where you could download a trial game and those colorful Ascii catalogs advertising the new games that had coming out. Anyone else miss these or are you glad they are gone ? just Curious. Cheers
joeybastard #2 Posted October 5, 2004 I do. My college bookstore had 100's of shareware games on floppies for .99 each. I'd buy a pack of smokes and grab a game for $4.25 just about every day Some of thos games were really great, some were terrible but at .99, I didn't care. I wish I had saved all of those games somewhere
Atariman #3 Posted October 5, 2004 I definately miss the days of shareware - I always had fun looking through this one catalog (I've long since forgotten the name of it) that had probably a good 50-100 titles in each issue that you could order. The last shareware game I remember my friend or I getting was Monster Bash (from the catalog) and I think the last shareware I found in a store was probably hocus pocus at Value City... Stella+KDE #4 Posted October 5, 2004 yeah, I got smart one day and backed up all of mine to a CD/R since i knew the original floppies would someday fail and a few of them did not make it sadly my full version of monster bash is no more as well as my full copy of Bards Tale I and a few others. But the other 60 or so survived lucky for me. Cheers
joeybastard #5 Posted October 5, 2004 I had them all on my trusty old 486 that I eventually gave to a friend. He reformatted the HD and they were all gone. I can't remember what I did with the floppies but I doubt I saved them.

KaineMaxwell #7 Posted October 6, 2004 That's how I got introduced to classics like Apogee's Raptor and Id's Doom.
Stella+KDE #8 Posted October 6, 2004 i am just happy since before Doom3 came,Id made a Nice Modern version of Doom ,Doomii ,Doom CE , Doom Final Doom for a whole $9.95. so i don't have to boot to Dos to play the those and it even supports custom wads, now that is big bonus in my book. Wish apogee would do that with some or thier games like moster Bash seris or Secret Agent seris i would definatly buy those for like 9.95 as well but probably won't happen Cheers
Radio F Software #9 Posted October 6, 2004 Man I remember a LONG time ago when I had a Windows 3.1 my mom surprized me with a Game Empire CD with like 1000 Shareware games. Though I never bought any games, I loved that CD to death. I still have it. I still play it. I also own a few of those Multi Game CDs they sell nowadays. I have a second 1000 shareware game CD I got for $10 but it is pretty new.

2600Lives #12 Posted October 6, 2004 Anyone ever frequent Dollar stores? Several around here have some computer games for a buck a piece. I got a disc with like 20 old RPG's on it for a buck, and just today, picked up two discs, both space shooters. Cool stuff man. And you can even get some DVD's, too. Picked up 3 of the Max Fleischer Superman cartoon DVD's for a buck each about 3 months ago. Damn cool stuff.

There was a Tetris-like game on there(can't remember the name) with an old man with a beard in the beginning that was super good. It also Oil Panic, one of my all time favorite puzzle games. Cool... ...I really need a Dos dedicated machine with a 5.25 inch drive on it. I have *sooo* much room for it next to my Pentuim 2 and Pentium 4 computers. Those are only a few of the games form two large disk holders I have... so if you do actually set up that machine I would love to get 3.5 inch floppies of all of these (of corse on one could stop you from making copies yourself)... I could pay postage both way but would need back the big disk, and the new little disk of course. Anyone have an old external 5.25 floppy disk drive?
