What is your favorite eye candy in a 2600 game?

Recommended Posts

Comparation between looks of Combat or Outlaw, against Solaris and Radar Lock. The difference between what they thought VCS will do and what it actually has done.

Gangster alley death sequence is pretty cool too.

I agree with the Ms. PacMan posts too.

I remember turning on Ms. Pacman the first time and wondering

what happened when they made PacMan.

The Robot Tank death sequence. I always thought that was pretty cool.

And I was blown away at how good the Tapper bonus level was.

My favorite bit of eye candy was the fast moving 3D mazes in Escape From The Mindmaster, with the sliding force fields zipping through the walls. And when you complete a level, you've also got the cool "climbing the staircase" graphic effect. Good one.

I loved the Yars' explosion also, the ET opener was cool to, but my favorite was the sound when you lose in Missle Command I wish I could spell it LOL, the flashing screen wasnt all that, I just loved that sound. My cousin and I would name the cities New York, LA, DC Chicago ect... and say it was the Russians attacking (80's childhood thinking).

I have to add the movable eyes in Haunted House. Haunted House had some cool effects like the match lighting, the lightning when you get zapped along with the rolling eyes, and the overall feel. I wish someone would come out with a new game similar to this.

This

Aww, the beauty of Interleaved Chronocolor®

When I was a kid, I was impressed by the radar in Chopper Command. I always thought that was a cool thing.

Wow :-)

So it was a homebrew cart! That's some cool stuff  8)

It looks even better on real hardware! :-) Andrew has done some amazing things on the system. If you do a forum search, you can find a bunch of the Greeting Cart ROMs with different pictures and even download a small program to make your own. There was even a short movie clip (or for all I know, there may have been more than one). The one I remember was pretty hardcore XXX porno. Yah, it was a little grainy on Atari hardware, but a lot more revealing than Custer's Revenge.

The warp thing in Yars' Revenge, the lasers in Laser Blast, and the explosions in Kaboom. Un-freaking-believable when your only other gaming experience is Pong.

I was also blown away by Tunnel Runner -- that was a game that amazed me with its programming genius.

The tank treads in Battlezone, how they moved "correctly"...

then after I started to think about it, pretty much everything about that game...I think the way it does 3D is more impressive than Tunnel Runner, which was a lot like the stuff I saw on C=64 in BASIC...

The Robot Tank death sequence.  I always thought that was pretty cool.

Battlezone had a sweet one as well...I always thought that game was Robot Tank's daddy.

I was always impressed by the enemy tank fire's proper physics when you'd back away at an angle, and from your viewpoint, the shot would curve away from you.

My 2 fav VCS graphics are the stomping Frankenstein in Frankenstein's Monster and all of Tunnel Runner but especially when the bad guys are chomping right at you after a death.

My first of many eye candy experiences with the VCS was seeing the drop shadow in Tennis. I was also blown away by "real words" like DEUCE and AD IN actually showing up on the screen, as well as the Activision logo. The gameplay for Tennis is awesome, too. All in 2K!

It doesn't take much to impress me. I liked the Activision logo before the rainbow; when it used to scroll up the copywrite date after the logo. And the Activision sunset background that started with Barnstorming. I thought that was the best ever! Also I agree with the Robot Tank death. WOW!

My favorite eye candy pieces as well include E.T (the title screen and animations), and Tunnel runner (I was really impressed by having a 3D maze to run through that would move along pretty fast as you went up in levels). I was also impressed by the explosions in Atlantis. I don't know why, but they were always cool to look at. 8)

I always liked watching the after-game color cycling in Space Invaders. Very hypnotic! And if I remember correctly, the game kind of keeps on playing without you except with no volume.

Starfire is a great game. Anyone that does not have this yet should pick it up ASAP!
