any real security in using postal money orders?

I was wondering if there is any real security in using postal money orders. I want to purchase a few auctions but they only accept postal money orders. is there any way I can safeguard my money or will I be SOL if they cash the MO and never send the stuff?

But at least you can prove they cashed the money. Whether or not you can get them kicked off of ebay for stealing, or do mail fraud for stealing is another thing.
