maibock #1 Posted October 19, 2004 Madden '92 vs NCAA 2005 This pass weekend I played NCAA 2005 on the XBOX against my son(and stomped him soundly) and then later while riding the exercise bike in the basement, played Madden '92 against the computer. And you know, there really isn't much difference in game play, despite the huge difference in the number of buttons you can push. Yeah, the graphics are rediculously different, but I was surprised at how common the game played between the two..
joeybastard #2 Posted October 19, 2004 You are soooooooo right. That's why I rarely buy new Football or baseball games. The newest ones I have are Sega NFL2k2 and Sega World Series 2K2 on the DC. I don't know anything about the players anyway so having old players means nothing to me. I see the GC versions of last years sports titles are cheap now, so I might pick those up, but only if I can get them for like $4.
maibock #3 Posted October 19, 2004 I don't know anything about the players anyway so having old players means nothing to me. That's kind of the fun part for me. I do know a bit about the players, old and new and it's fun to see teams of old again. In respect to players, the Eagles teams while totally different from 13 years ago. The team itself is very similar. A running quarterback who can pass, a tough daunting defense a good kicker. Also the ability to blow key championship games(oh wait that part was my fault)
128bytes #4 Posted October 19, 2004 I just bought Madden 2005 for the Game Boy Advance. You can have your cake and eat it too. It's the perfect marraige of old school Sega Genesis early 90's graphics with modern day playability. It's awesome.

Madden '95 + Sega Nomad = Madden 2005 for the Game Boy
cuda_man #6 Posted October 22, 2004 I was thinking the same thing after playing John Madden Football for the 3DO, which was basically Genesis Madden 93 with video and fancy graphics and sound. It's a shame that EA didn't make an updated Madden game for the 3DO. I've got Madden 2005 for the Gameboy Advance and it is much improved over the previous versions, which was nothing more that SNES Madden '95, especially the poor secondary when the defenders would stop running when the ball was passed (Madden '96 has a better defensive AI on the SNES). The new editions are nice, but sometimes I find myself dusting off the old Genesis or now 3DO and playing the older versions.
maibock #7 Posted November 9, 2004 another cursory observation: When playing defense on NCAA 2005 you can literally interfere with the receiver and block his path to the ball - no flag! However if you try this stunt with the early Madden games you get the pass interference flag most every time. and a tired gripe of mine - Why were we able to design our own plays and then use those play to make a play book and then run those plays in a real game in the first Madden, but never again in any of the other editions? Cootster #8 Posted November 9, 2004 Good question, maibock . . . I know I was highly disappointed when the console versions didn't have it . . . Do any of them even have 81 plays like the original CGA PC game? Of course, making your top running back straight 9's across the board = unbeatable super cheat. maibock #9 Posted November 9, 2004 Do any of them even have 81 plays like the original CGA PC game? I've never actually tried to figure out how many plays are available - The sets seem to be pretty much the same (goal line, pro, near, far, shotgun, run and shoot etc) Although I must admit, I was tickled to use the "make a play feature" in the first madden since I've always been a fan of the wishbone offense and no games actually included the wishbone(except, ironically NCAA 2005)

Mock #11 Posted November 9, 2004 the old DC football games are horrible compared to ESPN NFL2K5...for $20 you can't go wrong...the basketball version is actually playable also...but frustrating...lol.
Cootster #12 Posted November 9, 2004 Do any of them even have 81 plays like the original CGA PC game? I've never actually tried to figure out how many plays are available - The sets seem to be pretty much the same (goal line, pro, near, far, shotgun, run and shoot etc) They're grouped in 9 sets of 9 in the original. Numbered 11-19, 21-29 . . . 91-99. The Genesis versions don't have half as many plays. Although I must admit, I was tickled to use the "make a play feature" in the first madden since I've always been a fan of the wishbone offense and no games actually included the wishbone(except, ironically NCAA 2005) Super Play Action Football for SNES did . . . Now, that's the game that would have killed the Madden franchise if it had had licensed teams/players.
