Box Question

Recommended Posts

I've noticed several times in Ebay auctions that the "5200" on the front of the 5200 box has been cut out...leaving a fairly large rectangular hole on the front of the box.

My 5200 box (from an Ebay seller) that I received a few years ago is also this way. I wasn't sure why someone would have neatly cut out the "5200" out of an otherwise nice box. Since then, I've seen quite a few boxes on Ebay that have been cut in this way.

Was there some sort of Atari mail-in offer that required the mutilation of 5200 boxes...a free dustcover or something? I'd love to know. Does anyone have info on this?

Here's a link to a current auction to show what I'm talking about:

I just noticed the "free pacman" on the corner of the box in the auction.

Was the cut-out portion required to receive the free Pacman?

No, Pac-Man was already included with the system.

As an owner of the 5200 in the early 80's I never got across to mail in proof of purchase thing nor a contest that you had to cut the Actual Atari Logo of its box. Bizarre.

Yeah just below the "free Pac-Man" the word 'inside' is written ;)

So they no had to hack up box for it.

I've looked at many 5200 auctions & I've never noticed a hacked up box like that. Maybe previous owner needed it as part of a ransom note,
