Steve Woita's hidden message in Quadrun

Recommended Posts

(Hey Rasty, ROMHACK is my new fav toy!)

Steve mentioned that Quadrun contained an Easter egg with his name, but (like so many other programmers...) doesn't recall how to reveal it. I found the exact same message in the code that he used in TAZ - "WOITA WAVE". Using SHOWGFX, the graphics for this are at 05c5 - 0616

See my Taz entry for more info.

I'm curious if my Tazz prototype has the hidden name or not. I'm really curious about that PAL Taz I have coming.

QUADRUN mystery solved!

Thomas Jentzsch does it again. By making an easier version of the game, he found that if you simply play up to the 6th level (the levels before it are named GOONS, SNAGS, YO-YOS, NODS, and BRATS), the 6th is called "WOITA WAVE"!

I'm guessing nobody ever got that far before (it's a damn tough game).

Btw, whoever won the Video Game Masters competition that Atari had for this game (or Battlezone and Gravitar for that matter)??

Are you sure that's it? I see that message all the time! It's not hard to get that far. I think there's something else...

BTW that PAL Taz I'm getting is a prototype, not a released cart.

Why didn't you ever mention it?? That's been on my contest page for nearly a year.

Well, maybe not for you

What else is hidden in it- speak up man!

You know, it never occured to me that was it since you don't have to do anything special to get it. Quadrun is all about practice, if you only play every now and then you won't get far. I played it alot when I was testing out my Quadrun proto and got quite good at it. I've never gotten past the Woita Wave, it just keeps sending out random enemies over and over again.

From a programmers point of view, Quadrun looks very rushed done (lots of wasted space and cycles). Maybe Steve was under great pressure doing it, so he found no time for a real easter egg. Any information about that?

But if there is a *real* easter egg inside the game, what could it be? Any rumours?

I'll have a closer look at the disassembly again, maybe there is something we missed.

Questions, questions, questions...

I noticed that just before the level name appears, there are 2 rows of numbers that are flashed. Ex. Right before:

GOONS

>->10<-<

appears, you first get:

111111

000000

Tried to get a screenshot of it, but it won't save it - if I pause it when the numbers are on the screen and save it, the picture shows "GOONS" instead!

These numbers appear with a real cart too. Strange...

Also, I love every time you get to the next level, the voice sample plays faster!

I got my answer from the man himself,

"It's because I just used the 6 character kernel for the score & left one frame of the previous score in the kernel & I think that's why you see the numbers just before I switch the 6 character kernel to display the text(Goons, Nods etc.)."
