z28in82 #26 Posted October 28, 2004 If the PSP will get 3-4 hrs I'd be happy since I'd been hearing 2-21/2 hrs all along. Seriously if you can't throw it in the charger at night wait 2 months and there will be car chargers, office docking ports and all other kinda weird options for ya. I was very hesitant on the PSP due to batter life and being UMD based, why would I wanna buy movies on 2 formats now (DVD & UMD) but if sony has addressed one of my worries that is a good start. So I'm just waiting to see some of the killer release titles and just how good the will look before I go ape shit over the PSP.
xenomorpher #27 Posted October 28, 2004 Maybe the memory card has more than one function... It will be the standard Sony Memory Stick. It will also be for MP3s, maybe pics and short videos. I kinda figured it would be a bit like the GP-32.
z28in82 #28 Posted October 28, 2004 Supposedly there will be an adaptor that will allow you to use the mem stick in a PS2 so that game saves could be transfered between systems.
joeybastard #29 Posted October 28, 2004 The only time I want more than 3 hours battery life is on my flights to Vegas. I think 3-4 hours is just fine indeed. I'm also impressed by that price. This should be an interesting new battle of the videogame giants
z28in82 #30 Posted October 28, 2004 The prie is very nice especially since I was hearing prices like $300-350 being tossed around as recently as 2 months ago.
Gabriel #31 Posted October 28, 2004 Well, the DS ended up seeming a little bit better than the Virtual Boy it seemed to be destined to become. The PSP has it beat in appearance though. It just looks sleeker and cooler overall. It will depend on the advertising and the image which gets presented. Sony is probably planning on selling its handheld to college student age persons. From their adolescent advertisement campaign and the initial allotment of games, Nintendo is probably still selling to the pre-teen crowd. It all boils down to games. We don't know what the PSP will have available at launch. It will probably have an EA shovelware title or two. That's about all that's certain. We do know what the DS will have available at launch. First, there will be a repackaging of Mario 64 (which I never thought was a good game in the first place). That alone will typecast the DS as a pre-teen toy for the rest of its days. The rest of the launch titles are Grade B and generally uninteresting titles. So, from that perspective, both systems suck. IF some of the games announced as coming soon become reality, I must admit the DS surprises me. IF Advance Wars and Final Fantasy III come out for the DS, then I would definitely consider purchasing it. Until then, there isn't anything on either one which appeals to me, and therefore I won't buy either yet. I've learned my lesson about buying consoles in anticipation of games which aren't out yet. I think that if Sony plays its cards right and presents the PSP correctly for it's US launch that it will finally be real competition to the GameBoy empire. And I think the gimmicky, goofy nature of the DS will hurt it in the marketplace.
carolsheba #32 Posted October 28, 2004 I remember when we got the sku at work back in May it said the price was $499 Canadian. lol
xenomorpher #33 Posted October 28, 2004 And I believe you can buy more than one battery pack which is pretty nice.
Stingray #34 Posted October 28, 2004 I have to say I'm not overly excited about either of these systems at the moment. I only got a GBA SP a few months ago, that should keep me entertained in the handheld arena for quite some time to come. I'll probably end up buying of these systems in the next year or two after the price drops some and the library of games expands sufficiantly for me to make an informed decision on which one interests me most. -S
Albert #35 Posted October 28, 2004 Of the two systems I like the PSP better, and part of this is I'm tired of Nintendo's dominance in the handheld market for so long. I think the Nintendo DS has too many gimmicky features (such as the two screens) that most games are not going to take advantage of very well. The PSP seems like a solid platform with some nice hardware, but I also agree that games just ported from the PS2 or other consoles may not be as much fun to play "on the go". And the battery life is a downer, even if it is a rechargable battery pack (a big advantage over the Lynx and other systems that used regular batteries). It will be interesting to see what happens as these systems come out, games are released, and people get to play with them firsthand. ..Al
Gregory DG #36 Posted October 28, 2004 Which ever one takes dominance, I hope that they really push the wireless technology. I'd love to walk into my house and just "magically" connect to the router and play a game against someone.
King Atari #37 Posted October 30, 2004 I dunno, the PSP doesnt do a thing for me, but if they port RE 2, 3, and Code veronica, along with the GTA games, I'd get it for sure. Same here, portable RE is a must now that it can be done. I think the biggest problem with the PSP is gonna be that there's moving parts in it. A nasty fall, and you could knock parts out of alignment. The DS, I read, is specially made to avoid such situations (though I'm sure slamming it against a wall wouldn't be good for it). Another thing about the PSP screen, it's so wide, maybe it will be more susceptible to cracking/breaking? Hopefully there's a cover. Well, I'll probably end up buying a PSP sooner or later, but not at that price. I'm definitely getting the DS launch day (or whenever my GS gets them in), simply for Mario 64 DS. I can't tell you how long I've waited for a portable version of this game. I really hope the DS wins the 'war', it seems like a more all-around gaming machine. Nintendo really needs to not overload the system with kiddy shit, though. Putting out 900 variations of Pokemon is a no.
NovaXpress #38 Posted October 30, 2004 I hope Sony makes this work just so Nintendo has some competition. I don't like seeing one company monopolize the handheld market any more than I would like to see one company dominate the console market. Assuming the EA Sports titles make use of the online play, that's a potential seller. The important thing is that aside from the sports games, Sony offers new titles. They don't want to make the 5200 mistake of launching with a bunch of games we already own.
eric_ruck #39 Posted October 30, 2004 Wireless may be a neat application but I bet it kills the battery performance. If you're using a laptop with a built-in wireless on battery and not at a hotspot, you can save a decent amount of battery but shutting off the wireless. And anyone with a PDA that supports Bluetooth probably already knows what that does to the battery life. It's interesting, I'm planning on not buying a PSP because I'm done with Sony. With exactly one exception, everything I've owned from Sony is crap, with the PS2 being the prime example. (The exception is the surround sound processor in the den.) At that price point I bet the quality is going to be pathetic. Interesting thing, I was hanging around a Gamestop waiting for a carryout sushi order being prepared two doors down. Pretty much the sentiment all around is the same. Some of the announced titles sound enticing, certainly more than the launch lineup for the DS, but nobody wants to be stuck with a $200 piece of crap. xenomorpher #40 Posted October 30, 2004 I say wait until it comes out then we will see what is what. Im going to wait because I never buy portables around launch only consoles.
