this tickles me in the wrong way... I won an auction for some DVDs... anyways, I paid the guy right on the spot with paypal, so today I've got an email from him saying 'your dvds are in the mail, please post a positive feedback as soon as u get'em, I will do the same after u post your feedback to me'

wouldn't he just post me a positive feedback for the quick payment regardless of what I'm gonna say about him?

I think that a lot of sellers try to strong-arm you into leaving positive feedback in this way.

It's pretty common among sellers, unfortunately; they hold their feedback ransom pending the sort of feedback you leave them. In a way I can understand where they're coming from -- if they get some PITA buyer who's could turn around and rag him out for some rediculous issue that may not even be anything to do with him then at the very least the seller has some recourse if a neg is given for some absurd reason.

 

Of course, in a perfect world the seller should leave appropriate feedback as soon as the buyer's end of the bargain is held up (i.e. he pays). This is what I do, since I feel that once a buyer has paid, that's their half of the deal fulfilled and if it was satisfactory then there's no really justifiable reason that I should withhold my feedback to him unless I've been given some indication that the buyer might be a problem later on. Fortunately I've never run into any problem buyers yet, and I may end up changing my policies if something nasty happens, but until then I'll stick with the "right" way.

I used to leave feedback for buyers immediately after payment, then I ran into a crazy person with even crazier demands. I got a completely undeserved neg out of it that ruined my 100% positive rating. So never again will I leave feedback first (as a seller).
