figgler #1 Posted November 10, 2004 Wow. I never really appreciated the coolness of this game until I sat down and invested a few serious hours into it the other weekend. I got hooked, finished it for the first time and am still very much impressed. Great game with some very cool gameplay elements not seen before or since on the NES, and don't even get me started on the plot advancements / developing story that are commonplace now of course, but far ahead of their time back then. I really liked the enormity of Snake's inventory. Great stuff, so many weapons and equipment items that you actually feel like you could stop the Metal Gear all alone. Awesome game. Play and finish it first chance if you haven't already. Uh-oh! The truck have started to move!
Dones #2 Posted November 10, 2004 You pretty much explained how the game actually felt when it was released. The game had cool box art (gasp? an american box art that actually looks good?). It also came with a poster sized map of the game's many buildings. While the size of the base is small by today's standards, it was huge back then! Stingray #3 Posted November 10, 2004 I have this one, but never really got into it. Maybe I'll give it a whirl next time the NES is hooked up. -S
Brad2600 #4 Posted November 10, 2004 It's one of my favorite games ever. My brother has tried beating it as well but I doubt that he ever managed to.
Great Hierophant #5 Posted November 10, 2004 Ever since I discovered the MSX version of Metal Gear, I haven't played the NES version for very long since. Now that the MSX version of Metal Gear has been re-translated, I have even less reason to do so.
NE146 #6 Posted November 10, 2004 Yeah I wouldn't call the NES version: "original Metal Gear". But yeah I know what you're talking about. This was my first introduction to the game as well and I still have a lot of fond memories about it I feel asleep!
joeybastard #7 Posted November 10, 2004 I like the NES version much more than the modern games but I'm sure I'm in the minority on that.
xenomorpher #8 Posted November 10, 2004 I have this game and love it. The translation of words as you can see is a bit choppy. What is cool the story still continues today and the last Hideo Kojima Metal Gear game is out in a few days. I like it because it has a very solid story and gameplay (well atleast to me)
tyranthraxus #9 Posted November 10, 2004 I would say I am among the few that prefers the NES original to the current sequels. The size and variety of gear was just amazing back then. Also the games plot wasn't as developed as the silliness that we get on the modern sequels and best of all it didn't have all those cut scenes but the long text sequences do drag at times. The modern games have great (if too short) gameplay but the laughable cutscenes/storyline really distract from the game. Does every character in the game have to be each other's long lost relative? And that incest subplot in MGS2 was just friggin awful.
Dones #10 Posted November 10, 2004 To be fair, the game wasn't "perfect". The graphics were OK and there wasn't a lot of animated sprites going on (and we all know about the mis-translations). The constant changing of keycards to open doors could get annoying as well as the backtracking for ammo. Still with all the limitations it made for a great game. Something I really liked about the game was the music. I still remember the tune when inside the buildings. It's stuck permanently in my head.
ninjarabbit #11 Posted November 11, 2004 Metal Gear was very much ahead of its time and I feel very underappreicated for its time. I had always wished for a SNES sequel but alas.
xenomorpher #12 Posted November 11, 2004 Metal Gear was very much ahead of its time and I feel very underappreicated for its time. I had always wished for a SNES sequel but alas. Yes I agree way ahead of its time and some people dont appreciate it. I have played the true sequal (not Snakes Revenge it was done by a seperate team) Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake on an MSX emulator which was nice. It would be cool if they rereleased it or redo it like Resident Evil for GC. Its nice because Metal Gear inspired a lot of games. (Tenchu, Splinter Cell even though I didnt like it since you cant move fast while aiming the gun)

figgler #15 Posted November 11, 2004 So does anyone else find it, um.. kind of strange that the Metal Gear isn't even in Metal Gear? They talk about often enough and you destroy the super computer that controls it, but I never actually saw the thing other than on the label art. Weird
Dones #16 Posted November 11, 2004 Good point man. Actually I used to think about this. The game does tells you that you are going to destroy it indirectly by blowing the super computer (or something like that). I think it was in Nintendo Power where I learned if you used the cigarettes in the final countdown it would slow down the count. Another trick I used to do was to stock up on rations and go for the boss at the end of the long gray quicksand tunnel. It's been so long I forgot if this was the way to do it or if youhad some power up that would protect you from the quicksand.
figgler #17 Posted November 11, 2004 I thought that was water. Funny eh? In any case, the oxygen tank will protect you through this by letting you breathe under the water/sand so you don't eat up all your rations. The cigarette thing I didn't know about. I was wondering what they were for. This is probably the one and only time you'll see ciagrettes condoned in Nintendo Power, that's for sure

Thanks for jogging my mind. That's what I used to do: stock up on rations and go as fast as I could. I would pause into menu mode before the last stripe of my energy bar disappearing and then recharge. Repeat this a few times and you'll get to the end of tunnel before getting the tank. You need to have earned enough stars (from saving hostages) to do this though. Good tip for anyone looking to do a speed run. Water? I always thought of it as gray, erm, liquid stuff. Great Hierophant #19 Posted November 11, 2004 In my opinion, Metal Gear was far better before Kojima started to inject his views into the game. The gameplay mechanics have improved though.
killersquirel #20 Posted November 11, 2004 Just out of curiousity, what views do you not like. I have only played the original metal gear on the nes and the original metal gear 2 on the msx. -mike P.S. This is not flame bait, I'm just curious.
Atariboy2600 #21 Posted November 12, 2004 I have all the first sets of Metal Gears games on MSX2, C64 and NES. As for the one on the Nintendo I like the music track better then the MSX one. Also I love play it all day and never get bored on it. I only hope that they RE-release the three games Metal Gear NES, Metal Gear MSX2, Metal Gear 2 Soild Snake MSX2. on some CD. They did relase the NES Metal Gear game on the Gamecube unit pack with the MGS The Twin Snakes for the Japanese market. And that got me really mad
xenomorpher #22 Posted November 12, 2004 Kojima got an award for shaping the future I forgot what is was exactly. I love his views (Metal Gear Solid told us about all the nukes in the world and if we the human race arent careful then something bad will happen) Others complain about the long Cinematics and character chats but they fail to realize It Is A Story. That is what its almost all about. It is so intriguing and the one for playstation made you feel their emotions. The story is so in-depth you have to have all the movies and stuff. Brad2600 #23 Posted November 12, 2004 I love the story. My brother and I used to theorize that the US Army was actually creating super soldiers and that Kojima had insider information...
figgler #24 Posted November 12, 2004 Others complain about the long Cinematics and character chats but they fail to realize It Is A Story. That is what its almost all about. Well that's the problem a lot of people have with MGS, myself included. It may well be a story, with indepth cinematics, but at its heart it's supposed to be a Game, not a movie. Theres just a lot of different formulas (story, game, movie). It may have some movie elements (cool cinematics) but if anything besides a game its a story, a compelling one at that. I dont think it would pass good only as a movie or a book. Where it is at now is very good and its almost like it was made for only people who can truely appreciate it for what it is.
