Mister VCS #1 Posted November 17, 2001 Which was your favourite video game magazine in the classic area? Mine was the german magazine "Telematch". It had connections to the electronic game magazine. Anybody knows "Telematch"? The reviews of the classic games where very critical and pazifistic. The blamed games such as "Robot Tank" and "Battlezone". Battlezone was rated 5 on a scala from 1 to 6 (6 was the badest). The Telematch guys loved games such as Space Shuttle, Wing War (Coleco), Decathlon and Q bert (all rated 1).
moycon #2 Posted November 17, 2001 My favorite was of course Electronic Games. As a kid I used to pick up alot of the different magazines of the time. I still have most of them and EG was and still is my fav.
liveinabin #3 Posted November 17, 2001 I used to read Computer and Video Games mag. it's still going but it's junk now. Anyone know when Electronic Games mag started?
NE146 #4 Posted November 17, 2001 I liked the usual stuff, Joystik (probably my favorite for arcade tricks), Electronic Games, and a whole bunch of others. One magazine that I liked and isn't too commonly seen was "Vidiot" which was put out by the same people who did that old music magazine "Creem". It would always put up pictures of various music artists playing video games and just have the most sarcastic captions under them. It was hilarious I still have the majority of my old mags but most of them are pretty beat up with tears and covers missing etc. oh well..
Elvis8Atari #5 Posted November 17, 2001 when it first came out nintendo power was cool. after about issue 25 it started to suck.

moycon #7 Posted November 17, 2001 I remember when Electronic Games changed format. Didn,t the first issue have some big fat Sumo guy on the cover? One thing I do remember I didn't like the magazine near as much after the change. Another decent Magazine from that time was Electronic Fun with Computers and Games. I'm pazifistic too, but I think, compared to other games, their rules where much to hard. And not only the TeleMatch guys loved Decathlon

Just checking
+Cafeman #10 Posted November 18, 2001 Electronic Games and Joystik were a killer combination of guaranteed great reading for the month. I wish dear old mom hadn't pitched them all ...
Ze_ro #11 Posted November 18, 2001 'fraid I never saw any of the old gaming magazines... by the time I started getting interested enough to buy them, it was already the era of magazines like Gamepro and EGM. I actually have a ton of Gamepro's still in my room, and read them now and then (I stopped buying them around the time the PSX came out). As for EGM, it always pissed me off because of that idiot reviewer Sushi-X. He always gave bad reviews to Gameboy games because they were in black and white! He even admitted it in his reviews ("This game would have gotten higher if it was in color", not to mention him ranting (in the reviews mind you) about not having a color Gameboy!). These are supposed to be objective reviews, dammit! --Zero
metalkeir #12 Posted November 18, 2001 Compute's Gazette was my fav growing up. How about current mags? Classic Gamer Magazine was great, but I guess they're switching to B&W now.

However they only scanned the arcade sections so some pages in each issue are missing. Also they didn't scan the one "console-only" issue. But it's still pretty nifty
bangles66 #14 Posted November 18, 2001 My favorite was and still is Electronic Games Don't know why I saved them but I'm glad I did. I have them all til they changed format. It's lucky that I was able to get first issue as I didn't see or know about at the time. I got the second issue at the grocrey store. While reading the letters section I found a guy who lived in the next town as it said his name and town after his letter. I got out the phone book looked up his name and called him, asked him if he wanted to sell it, he did and fortunetly mom and dad were more happy to take me to his house to pick it up. We went right away so he didn't have a chance to change his mind. I thought I was pretty resoureful for a fifteen year old at the time. I also have all the news letters that they published "Arcade Expreess" then they changed the name to Electronic Games Hotline.

rolenta #17 Posted November 18, 2001 quote: Originally posted by moycon: I remember when Electronic Games changed format. Didn,t the first issue have some big fat Sumo guy on the cover? No, the first issue of computer entertainer had something avout Adult War games on the cover. The covers of the first and last editions of all the major US magazines can be found in Appendix C of the 3rd edition of my book, Phoenix: The Fall & Rise of Videogames
MagMax667 #18 Posted November 18, 2001 I always liked Atari Age. I only had a couple of issues, but I liked that you could get games from that magazine that you couldn't get anywhere else. (Like S.Q. Waterworld.) I never got any of those games though and I hate myself because all of those games are worth $100+!

Sorry Albert, I don't want to part with any of my magazines. To rolenta (leonard) you stole my idea and I thought i was the only one to think of that back then. Just kidding, I only had a mono vcr at the time so i just put a y connector on the output, it wasn't really in stereo but it sure sounded better. Jess Ragan #20 Posted November 18, 2001 I remember when Electronic Games changed format. Didn,t the first issue have some big fat Sumo guy on the cover? Hey, that's not a very nice thing to say about Arnie Katz! > Just kidding. I never got the chance to read too many of the early video game magazines... I guess I was too young around the time they were published. However, someone sent me a copy of Electronic Fun a few years back and it was great. Not only were the reviews honest and intelligent, the reviewers were, too... they didn't put on airs or hide behind obnoxious psuedonyms like today's game magazine editors. Unfortunately, there was a guy very similar to EGM's irritating Quartermann in the back pages, but nobody's perfect, I suppose. Hey, does anyone have an on-line archive of articles from Electronic Fun, or any of the other magazines of the time? The mags are almost impossible to find now, and I'd love to catch up on all of those great articles. JR
Jess Ragan #21 Posted November 18, 2001 Expecting objectivity from Sushi-X is like expecting quality from the 1990-1996 issues of EGM... in other words, you're never gonna get it. JR
NE146 #22 Posted November 19, 2001 I scanned *some* articles and things from EGP (Electronic Game Player) which was basically EGM before they changed their name. It has an article from Quarterman etc. and various other things like reviews that used the "Direct Hit" format rather than 4 reviewers scoring 1-10 like the jap mags. Let me know if yer interested. videotwit #23 Posted November 19, 2001 The only Gaming publication I read is The 2600 Connection. I have no use for any others. It always has really great stuff in it, even if it is a shorter "zine" style mag. Sure, it wasn't published back in the classic era, but it is about classics! slapdash #24 Posted November 19, 2001 Hey Scott, thanks for the plug! Wasn't Telematch a sister mag to EG? I'll say that I really liked Electronic Fun way back. I didn't think anyone else would remember that one. I won the complete Starpath library from them too...
Jess Ragan #25 Posted November 20, 2001 Yeah, NE146, I'd love to see that! It's strange... I could have sworn that I saw a computer magazine with EGM's old (pre-1990) format. There was a review of a Commodore 64 arcade flight game by... um, Broderbund, I think, and they showed it no mercy. They said something to the extent of "This company's found the ultimate in software piracy protection... make a game so boring that nobody would want to copy it."
