slapdash #27 Posted November 20, 2001 It just doesn't come up in conversation very often. Everyone remembers EG, but EF gets neglected. I have a full collection too, made doubly sweet by the contest win and mention. I think the only other mag I got mentioned in at that time was Video & Computer Gaming Illustrated. Modern mags, on the other hand... I've been mentioned in a few, most recently -- finally! -- EGM.

JR Here are some selected scans of EGP: Electronic Game Player (Pre-Electronic Gaming Monthly) I only scanned 5 pages including the cover, but it gives you an idea of the way EGM used to be prior to them changing their name. It has all the old folks like Steve Harris, Ed Semrad, Quarterman, etc. And if Sushi-X WAS with EGM in the way beginning, I'll bet his name is listed in there too somewhere -NE1
slapdash #29 Posted November 21, 2001 EGP... The "Gaming Gossip" scan reminds me -- I always thought "Quartermann" was a ripoff of EF's "The Fly".
Jess Ragan #30 Posted November 22, 2001 I agree with you on this one, Russ. They're both annoying as hell. BTW, it'd be great if you could get scans or transcripts of those issues of Electronic Fun online. I'd love to see more issues of that mag... Wouldn't surprise me. Their 4 man review crew was obviously adapted from the jap video game mags as well... Speaking of which I do remember some "rumor mill" type articles from some really old mags I got (I forget which). Of course the news was 2600 and other older console related. I'll have to look for that and give it a scan.. should be fun Which leads me to another thought.. yknow, it's really a blast reading the older magazines when the VCS was the dominant console and seeing the ads and reading the reviews. It sort of makes it all fresh and brings a pretty good perspective on the whole 2600 gaming thing and how it was marketed and talked about. Maybe I'm a little strange as I like to read these mags as if they're "current" and get pumped up again for playing some of the games I generally would have missed just by reading a review or seeing an ad with the appropriate hype for it. ..anyway, just some rambling thoughts. VectorGamer #32 Posted August 28, 2013 Which was your favourite video game magazine in the classic area? Easy: Electronic Games. Most likely I threw all my issues in the trash BITD and now I am collecting what I can find on eBay. I also recently started collecting Replay and Play Meter magazines from the 70s and 80s. I'll read these mags from front to back and it's really neat (knowing what we know now) to read what was the latest and greatest of that time. Also interesting to read about all the hot new products that never made it to market. You can find scans of Electronic Games here: http://www.digitpress.com/library/magazines/ As far as I know, there are no scans existing of Replay and Play Meter. JadeETC #33 Posted August 28, 2013 Nintendo Power used to be cool, but I picked up a more recent issue not too long ago and it had little to be desired, though I liked that they still focused on the classics at times. The 2600 Connection is awesome.
S1500 #34 Posted August 29, 2013 Videogaming & Computergaming Illustrated. A mag I discovered in '89. The mag ran from '82-'84. I'm 3 issues away from a full set.

Raiu #36 Posted August 29, 2013 (edited) At the time, I didn't realize there were that many magazines, and.. . well, I was a broke preteen in those days, and convincing Mom to buy (let alone subscribe) to such magazines was never easy. I did talk her into getting me a subscription to Dan Gutman's Video Game Player (later Computer Games), but that didn't last very long. (The magazine, I mean... I stayed subscribed as long as it lasted) The only other magazines I ever subscribed to were Atari Age and Nintendo Power (though I bought every issue of EGM for years off the shelf, I think from issue 9 or so). ... and, oh dear. I didn't notice this topic was twelve years old. That's about how old I was when I first read Video Games Player Edited August 29, 2013 by Raiu
+Ransom #37 Posted August 29, 2013 Electronic Games was the best, IMO. I still have all my issues from BITD, too.
mbd30 #38 Posted August 29, 2013 Holy crap, this thread is ancient. I grew up with "Video Games & Computer Entertainment" and "Gamefan". I wish I'd held on to all those issues. It would be so damned nostalgic to read them now.

high voltage #40 Posted August 29, 2013 (edited) Being in Europe, yes TeleMatch was the first 'real' good gaming mag in Germany. It co-operated with EG, even translated some interviews. C&VG (UK) was sold in Germany too, of course I preferred that to TeleMatch since they didn't bash games like Battlezone. Happy Computer another good German mag, focused on computers. ASM (Germany) started in 1986 was a great computer games (later also consoles) magazine. Antic (US) was available in Germany too. Germany had great C64 magazines, as did UK (ZZAP!, CU, Your 64 etc) Good to see Slapdash used to post here, I bought a lot of EGs from him. jhd #41 Posted August 30, 2013 When I got my first Atari 2600 console in about 1981 at age 10, I was not really aware of video game magazines -- nor would I have had the money to buy them. My information came largely from catalogues and the one other person at school who had a 2600. By 1983, I had sold the Atari and moved on to a Coco. Very shortly thereafter, I discovered platform-specific computer magazines. I started regularly buying/reading Byte in January 1987. I have, however, managed to download copies of most of the classic (1980s) game magazines, and it is great fun reading the industry news, previews of never-released games, CES reports, etc.

1982VideoGames #43 Posted September 5, 2013 I liked the GamePro mags the best for the 16-bit era. Electronic Games was the best for the 8-bit era.
