mos6507 #1 Posted November 20, 2004 I know there are still a lot of new PC titles coming out (like Half Life 2) but it seems to me like the XBox exclusives are stealing away a lot of good titles from the PC. There are more titles than every that show up on PS2 and XBox but not on the PC. I'm assuming this is due to a) Microsoft wanting XBox exclusives, and b) critical mass on PC piracy. I don't necessarily think it's due to customer trends. I mean, what incentive is there to need to own an Xbox when you already have a PC with twice the horsepower to run your games on? I know consoles are less trouble-prone than PCs, but that's been the case forever and the PC game market just seemed more vital before the XBox arrived. It seems like if you are on a PC there are genre of games you just aren't going to find anymore. It wasn't so long ago that companies like Sega were porting console titles like Sonic to and Virtua Fighter to the PC. These days console-type games don't really show up on the PC, and the PC seems to be dominated by mostly flight sims, RPGs, and RTS games. If you have a PC, are you really restricting your game choice these days or what? What do you think?
Fretwobbler #2 Posted November 20, 2004 I think that the future of PC gaming will becoming Tech-Demo land, driven more by showing what can be done with graphics hardware and on-line gaming as a testbed/benchmark for future console generations. Most people who take PC gaming seriously will also have 1 or 2 consoles a well, so I dont think gamers will miss on many titles that are console-exclusive (which there arent that many really, from the pool of big-hitting titles at least, you juts have to wait a while, or get it for one of your consoles) - the exception id say is the Gamecube. PS2 and Xbox titles almost always make it to the PC, there are lots of GC games that dont though. It will contiune to dominate the FPS, RTS, TBS, MMOG's genre's. I think third person titles and adventures are slipping to become the domain of the console. It will continue to dominate competative gaming (despite one-off console triumphs such as the occasional massive Halo tourny)
Avid Fan #3 Posted November 20, 2004 What I used to love was how much better PC games looked than their console versions. But now, we have kick ass consoles, and the difference graphically is moot to some people, to me, things look good enough on a XB or a GCN
Shannon #4 Posted November 21, 2004 The technological gap between PC's and consoles is closing and aside from a keyboard and mouse a PC does not offer much more. Plus there is the compatibility issue. Just look at all the problems people have been having with the recentally released half life 2 and roller coaster tycoon 3. As far as console titles on PC's go, actually it seems like more and more titles that I see for the PC have been released for the console as well. Although the PC is still better suited for the genres you mentioned. Something like RCT 3 will never translate well to a console.
