What's the Best Genesis Controller?

Recommended Posts

I've been going through a big box of Sega Genesis controllers and I am curious as to which one everyone likes best? Each one I test feels loose and unresponsive... I'm guessing current gaming controllers have spoiled me a bit.

I have a couple Sega 6 Button Arcade sticks that I bought bran new in box with waranty cards and manuals unused at GoodWill for $2 each a few months ago... they're pretty nice. :D

I'd say for game pads, it's pretty easy to find oldstock ones that are unused on e-bay for cheap. In fact I got a set of these they are pretty good... since they were unused t hey were also not worn out.

Those are the SEGA 6-Button Turbo Pad. There is an almost exact model that doesn't have the turbo and slo-motion feature. I like those a little better. Less clutter on the controller itself, and who the hell uses slow-motion mode anyways.

The only game I ever used slo-mo on was Star Force for the NES... so yeah, that's not a feature I necessarily need.

I have 4-5 of those 6-button controllers in this box... just haven't gotten to them yet. I think there's an Arcade Stick in here too... I seem to recall it working well.

If the Nomad didn't go for so much on Ebay, I'd pick up one of 'em and ditch all my Genesis hardware. They're still $70-$100 though every time I look.

It's worth having one if you can pick one up. I rarely play gennie games on anything else.

Yeah, Nomads are nice but mine has weird problems.. it locks up sometimes.... very irritating.... I wouldn't ditch all of my other genesis hardware if it did work though... I have too many Sega CD and 32x games and besides, my Model 1 Genesis/Sega CD is modded to play all import Sega CD games... all I need to do is add a 50/60hertz switch to the genesis.

Yeah, slo-mo does suck for the most part. Though I have made use of the pause button in play once or twice... :ponder:

Well I own a power pad and a joystick for my Genesis, but for some reason I always find myself going back to the regular factory standard model that came with it. :P

I've had a few Genesis pads over the years, but I'd have to say that my Super Pad, by Performance, was the best. It's D-pad was really, really elevated above the controller's face. Made it a little more responsive. And it's a 6-button design, too.

The one thing i never liked about the six button pad was its size. It always felt to small to me i liked the size of the three button but the d pad was to stiff to me. Im yet to find a good third party controler in the middle for the genesis. But i find the six button standered works well for most games.

Yes, that's the most irritating thing about Nomads. The contacts get dirtier and dirtier with age, and if your connection with the game breaks, it will lock. This happens often with Nomads since they naturally move around a lot when you're playing. That's kind of the point of a portable. :)

Clean your cart and console contacts, (and try to remain perfectly still when you play) and you should see some improvement.

At the Oklahoma Game Expo, I was going to buy one of the two Nomads a vendor there had for sale, but I decided to test the one out first, and it just wouldn't work. When a game finally came up on the screen, it froze at the splash screen. So I tried out the second one, and I couldn't even get as far as the game's splash screen. I ended up buying an Odyssey2 instead. I'd like to buy a Nomad, but I think i'll buy it in person, instead of by mail order. So I can test it and make sure it works.

I've always been a fan of the 6-button version of this one :

Sure, it looks like your basic generic knock-off and has a slightly cheap plastic feel to it but it's got a very responsive D-pad (I think that the 1st party 6-button Sega controller is too loose) and the buttons are very responsive as well. It's also got slo-mo and auto-fire settings if you're into those things (I'm not). Plus it looks vaguely like a Baterang; how cool is that?

That's interesting about you guys having problems with the Nomad locking up. I guess I just got lucky with mine, it gives me no problems whatsoever.

I just want to know why all those third-party controllers had Slo-Mo built in? Really, was it that popular? I've never found a use for Slo-Mo in a game before, but all these controllers have it built-in, like it's a vital part of gaming.

Well I guess there must have been some market for it.... I know that all the new wireless controllers that Messiah Entertainment is putting out have it.

Personally, I like the 1st-party 3-button pads. They fit my hands quite well, and Start is ACCESSABLE.
