Robert M #1 Posted December 1, 2004 When I was a kid back in the 80's I was too old to get into Smurfs so I ignored the Smurf's: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle from Coleco. Now that I look at it though: http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html...wareLabelID=444 It is really a very well done game. The graphics and sound are top notch, and the gameplay is enjoyable and grows progressively harder as you complete rescues. The ROM is only 8K, so the programmers packed it all in very nicely. What to you think?
Voch #2 Posted December 1, 2004 I think it's a good game (the ColecoVision one is good, too), but it's nothing I'd ever admit in an online forum. Oops.
StanJr #3 Posted December 1, 2004 Hell yeah! Smurfs rule! I can hold my own pretty well rescuing Smurfette, but the game gets really fast really soon. I love it though. I too thought it was a "baby" game back in the 80's. No more!
candiru #4 Posted December 1, 2004 Other than the weird jumping controls it really is a pretty impressive game for the old 2600. I know I've put a lot more time into it than I'd have thought I would for a Smurf game.

The ROM is only 8K, so the programmers packed it all in very nicely. What to you think? Yup, I'm a big fan of both the ColecoVision version, and the 2600 version. The difficulty ramps up nicely, and it's quite atmospheric, imo. It's also one of the few 2600 games my daughters have gotten into (now aged 5 & 7) - the spider screen really freaked them out, both the way the music changes, and also the spider itself. I guess it's movement seems quite unpredicatable when you're learning those really basic video game skills. The 7 year old can rescue Smurfette quite easily now, but rarely sticks with level 2 because of the added difficulty of the moving creature. She just resets and does level 1 again. Cassidy Nolen #6 Posted December 1, 2004 I can remember Woolco having a Coleco kiosk and that game playing back in like 83. I really wanted it. When I got into collecting, I was really happy to get that game, and even more excited it was a 2600 title. Given the 2600's limitations, I think it is a great game. I do play it once in a while, although the music does get a bit old (volume down is never a bad thing on that one!). Just an FYI: If you do system repairs and have a test cartridge, do not use this one. Was working on a light sixer that had a stuck first player fire on the board, and I never noticed it. Oops, that game does not use the fire button (or care if you push it). Cassidy
Godzilla #7 Posted December 2, 2004 I was really impressed with how much 2600 smurfs didnt suck at the time. I really prefer the 2600 version to the coleco version, its just so much more colorful and fast and just has a much greater replayability and addiction factor. DominiRican05 #8 Posted December 2, 2004 That's funny that someone would actually bring up this game in the forum....because I have been running Stella, and the one game that has got me excited over the 2600 again was...you guessed it -- Smurfs. I was really impressed with the job that Coleco did on that one. The Smurf is rather large for an Atari character and pretty well detailed. The scenery is lush and nice, and in a few of them the clouds even move. Also, this is one of the rare 2600 games that actually had background music, and I do think it's cool how the music changes during the spider scene. At first I was a bit disappointed that the game only had about 6 or 7 levels and that I was able to rescue Smurfette within a matter of minutes, but the fact that it got progressively harder made me want to keep playing on. I don't think I've made it past round three...those bad guys start going pretty damn fast! It's definitely one of my favorite 2600 games, and I think I might start collecting again for the system because of it. I was just wondering, is there any way that Coleco could've packed in a few extra scenes? Or was the cart packed to the max already?
jsoper #9 Posted December 2, 2004 I still like the CV version better, Smurfette closes her eyes and drops her dress. People say it's a bug but you know she was a slut. She was the only female, all the guys took turns
Red 5 #10 Posted December 2, 2004 I thought the game was pretty smurfy in the 80's. I still like it now, but not as smurfy as I thought it was back in the day -As a side note, when we were kids, my brother and I would watch the smurfs and die laughing because we pretended that whenever they said 'smurf' it was to replace a swear. My parents either thought we were nuts or that we just REALLY found the smurfs to be amusing.

jsoper #13 Posted December 2, 2004 And HOW would you know that for a fact? That reminds me of a story. Used to know this guy who worked at Paramounts Great America (amusement park) in a smurf costume. The kids always asked why he was so tall. He said "Well you think smurfs are small because of Gargamel, but guess what -- Gargamel is really 80 feet high
MosDN #14 Posted December 2, 2004 Talk about coincidence! Received Smurf Rigc (with some other games) today!! Have to try it

Tempest #18 Posted December 3, 2004 Given the 2600's limitations, I think it is a great game. I do play it once in a while, although the music does get a bit old (volume down is never a bad thing on that one!). Yeah about the time you hit the river the 2600's rendition of "Simple Gifts" gets terribly out of tune. Like they missed a flat or something. Still, it's quite impressive given the 2600's limited sound capabilities. Tempest
Stingray #19 Posted December 3, 2004 I suppose it's an impressive game from a technical standpoint, but from a gameplay standpoint I don't care for it. -S
candiru #20 Posted December 3, 2004 BTW, Bastard is not an obscene word. I agree, not obscene. It's actually one of my favorite borderline offensive (in some circles at least) terms. It just has a good sound to it. Belgium I can't believe you just said that!

Robert M #24 Posted December 4, 2004 I have gotten quite good at completing rescues at the jighest skill level. I wish after level 4 it would pick a random skill level for each screen. Sort of mix it up. It provide an interesting challenge since you would need to adjust your play on every screen rather than after 5 or 10 screens. Cheers!
