StanJr #1 Posted November 27, 2001 I was contemplating video games this evening while watching the Bucs knock the ever-cocky St. Louis Rams down a notch, and I realized one thing that makes me treasure the Atari and classic games so very much: You can die. Many modern video games make it almost impossible to die, or after you die, allow you to pick right back up where you left off. Not the good old VCS, "three lives" means "three lives." If you die, you have to prove your skills all over again from jump. How boring would a game like Keystone Kapers get if you could never die. How much fun would Ms. Pac-man be with inifinite Ms. Pac-mans (men?)? NONE! The fight to survive gives the majority of classic video games the ultimate replay value. I don't want to play Haunted House if the ghosts never "scare" me. Already Dead Stan
moycon #2 Posted November 27, 2001 Amen Stan, I was thinking that myself awhile back. I was playing some game that had a set amount of lives....But you could VERY easily rack up as many free men as you wanted plus save your game when-ever you felt like it. Dont get me wrong...I suppose you need it if you ever want to get to the end of a game. Especially if it takes 14 or 15 hours to get to the end. I was just reminiscing on how things USED to be and how they were now.
Ze_ro #3 Posted November 27, 2001 If you like dying, you should try NetHack. It's a role playing game that pretty much inspired Diablo. It has less in the way of graphics, but WAY more in the way of gameplay. However, the game is quite possibly one of the hardest games I've ever played... In my years of playing it, I don't think I've ever even gotten through half the game. And on top of the difficulty, when you restore your saved game, it's deleted. You can save your game and restart, but if you ever die, you can't reload. You have to start from the beginning again (Of course, there's ways to cheat... but where's the fun in that?) --Zero
