dvdguy #1 Posted December 3, 2004 I have been bidding on some Vectrex stuff this week, and today I get this email from another Ebay bidder... I can see that you're into the game scene. You're also bidding on several of these vectrex games from what I can tell, and I understand that. I'm just asking that you Please give me a break and not bid against me for this one that I'm trying to get for my kids. I can't afford high prices. That's why I'm bidding on a unit that has paint on it. I want to give it to my kids for Christmas. Thanks Think that's the truth?
Susuwatari #2 Posted December 3, 2004 hard to tell for sure. COuld be a reseller trying to get it cheap and then reselling it at a markup. Check the buyer's auction history.
dvdguy #3 Posted December 3, 2004 The emailed has or had bids on 5 Vectrex units. No other gaming stuff.
dvdguy #4 Posted December 3, 2004 Ugh, the EMAILER... need... edit... feature...
MrRetroGamer #5 Posted December 3, 2004 I would say that this is a weak attempt to play you on your sympathy- whether or not you buy it is up to you. If they can't afford high prices, perhaps they should not be bidding in the first place. That is surely not your problem, or the problem of the people who will bid at the last second. Lemmi #6 Posted December 3, 2004 ive had a few sympathy emails from people, when i was building my 3DO collection after the first email i started emailing back "If i did that for you i would have to do it for all the Yahoos like you, and good luck bidding against me"
davepesc #7 Posted December 3, 2004 If this person has bids on 5 units, he (she?) is not just trying to scrounge a damaged Vectrex for his poor child's Christmas. What if he won all 5? Would he not pay for the 4 most expensive? And why bid on a Vectrex for a child's Christmas present when you could get a PS1 practicly for free. The whole thing does not compute. Snipe him. dvdguy #8 Posted December 3, 2004 Yeah the Vectrex as a kids Christmas present is a bit odd. Just get an original Game Boy and a lot of carts to go with it. Cheaper than a Vectrex, that's for sure.
Stingray #9 Posted December 3, 2004 I'm pretty sure I'd completely disregard that email. Even if it is real it certainly isn't your problem. Like you guys have said, if the guy can't afford a Vectrex there are plenty of cheaper systems that he could get that his kids would very likey rather have. -S
MegaManFan #10 Posted December 3, 2004 My advice, don't fall for it. I remember somebody getting pissy with me when I had the high bid on four copies of Mega Man 7 at the same time, asking why I couldn't let him win one. What he failed to realize was that my strategy WAS to win one, and let the other three go. Due to the high demand and high price the only way I could get one for any reasonable amount was to high bid on four of them simultaneously. Once I won the first I got outbid on the other three. So don't let the complaints, whining, or begging of other people change your bidding strategy. If you want something, go for it.
jetset #11 Posted December 4, 2004 Just shoot back an email saying the same... "Wow! We have a lot in common, MY kid is after that too! What a co-inky-dink!" Fortunately I'm short on cash as well, so I feel your pain. Hopefully whichever one of us wins gets a good deal. Or you could just tell him...... Tell him he can get a nice NES or 2600 with a bunch of games for well under the price of a Vectrex. Begging other bidders to let him win really is pathetic. If you can't afford to pay the going rate, then find something else for the kids.

dvdguy #14 Posted December 4, 2004 Why not get an AdventureVision for the kids while you're at it.

But I can top it with a similar email that I received when I auctioned off a Vectrex Light Pen set in the summer. The guy asked me to reveal the reserve price to him because he needed to better judge whether or not he would be able to afford the item for his "handicapped son". After I responded by telling him "No...it wouldn't be fair to everybody else", he told me that it would be worth it for me to sell it to him at a low price (outside of ebay) because he would send me photographs of his son using the Light Pen, and that those photographs would "warm my heart"!!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahaha! Never have I been so blatantly lied to over an ebay transaction! Have to admit, the laughs DID warm my heart. George
