Atari-Jess #1 Posted December 11, 2004 How do YOU deal with some of the odd graphics or weird gameplay factors in certain 2600 games? If you don't understand, maybe my examples will help you. Night Driver: Oh, thats not my car, thats my hood ornament! Donkey Kong: It has more bars than the intellivision version.... and DK is on the right side! Star Ship: Ugh... I swear... its... a tactical display... Home Run: *BARF* no!... I won't let.... george plimpton win!....NO COMPARE! NO COMPARE!
Lauren Tyler #2 Posted December 11, 2004 Donkey Kong: It has more bars than the intellivision version.... and DK is on the right side! Never mind the fact it has more bars. At least it bears some resemblance to the arcade game! The Intellivision version could've been a LOT better!
broncoman #3 Posted December 11, 2004 i remember my first time playing dk on the 2600 i was like um a ginger bread man ?
Big Player #4 Posted December 11, 2004 Home Run isn't that bad if you think of it as an adaptation of stick ball or wiffle ball instead of baseball. Some of those pitches you can make defy the laws of physics and are nearly impossible to hit, but that's what makes it fun. My brother and I used to play this and the original football a lot before M Network came out with their Super Challenge Sports games.
Dr Galaga #5 Posted December 11, 2004 Just deal with it! At least Night Driver: 1) Is in color and 2) doesn't have a car sticker that you have to stick on your TV!
BassGuitari #6 Posted December 11, 2004 Just look past the graphics and play the games. Under the assumption the best variations of these games are played, they are all cool games. I've said it before and I'll say it again; If you play Atari in this day and age, you forfeit all rights to complain about graphics. And I firmly believe Intellivision's port of Donkey Kong is the worst version of the game. EVER. It controls and gameplay are *extremely* clunky almost to the point of being unplayable. And DK is green for God's sakes! Intellivision was a good system, that game should have been MUCH better.
Christophero Sly #7 Posted December 11, 2004 I've never played the INTV version, so I can't comment on the gameplay, but from those two screenshots the INTV version looks better to me. The girders look better, the ladders look better, the oil can looks better, the score display looks better, the platform the girl stands on looks better and it has the two ladders leading off-screen like the arcade. Donkey Kong may be on the wrong side in the INTV version, but most home versions are like that. At least he appears to be rolling barrels (from a stack of barrels), instead of just dancing in one place like he does on the VCS. So what if he's on the right (left) side of the the screen on the VCS...he's just standing there! Yeah, the INTV colors are ugly, but if the gameplay is decent (I can't imagine anything worse than the prosaic gameplay in the VCS version of Donkey Kong), then the colors aren't important to me. VCS Donkey Kong is awful. It's hard to believe that the INTV version could be worse.
NE146 #8 Posted December 11, 2004 Hey at least the 2600 version of Night Driver had a car.. the arcade version had a block (with the overlay on it of course) Donkey Kong was on the wrong side in the much fawned over Colecovision version as well. I don't think that was too important though.. what WAS lacking in almost all home console versions, was the feeling that you ever got/killed Donkey Kong! You never even saw Donkey Kong turn upside down or fall down or anything after you cleared the rivets stage.. i.e. no closure
joeybastard #9 Posted December 11, 2004 Home Run isn't that bad if you think of it as an adaptation of stick ball or wiffle ball instead of baseball. Some of those pitches you can make defy the laws of physics and are nearly impossible to hit, but that's what makes it fun. My brother and I used to play this and the original football a lot before M Network came out with their Super Challenge Sports games. That's exactly what we did, my friend alwys insisted Homerun wasn't called baseball because it wasn't. He used to actually refer to it as stickball and so did the rest of us. Homerun is fun regardless of the graphics.
Inky #10 Posted December 12, 2004 I always used to play NIght Driver, pretending that your car was a spaceship that had its lasers disabled, and you had to avoid the bombs (fenceposts) and aliens (oncoming cars).
BassGuitari #11 Posted December 12, 2004 VCS Donkey Kong is awful. It's hard to believe that the INTV version could be worse. Try it sometime. The only thing that bothers me about the Atari version of Donkey Kong is that it only has two levels.
gdement #12 Posted December 13, 2004 I always used to play NIght Driver, pretending that your car was a spaceship that had its lasers disabled, and you had to avoid the bombs (fenceposts) and aliens (oncoming cars). That was the great thing about the 2600. It really left a lot to your imagination.

MegaManFan #14 Posted December 18, 2004 There's nothing quite like playing Night Driver in black and white, on a black & white TV. If there was one experience other than playing Pac-Man at a Sears store that "defined" Atari for me in my childhood, this was it. I might not have been old enough to get behind a steering wheel, but zipping down that block lined road felt like some real "night time driving" to me! Godzilla #15 Posted December 18, 2004 heck star ship is still a personal fave of mine. I actually enjoy graphical abstration in my games. Nothing wrong with using the ol noggin for some 'magination. and night driver is awesome even if it looked worse it would be awesome, but considering that it actually looked better than the arcade game it was based on, I'd say that's pretty impressive for it's time.
