FA: Crazy Kong (Donkey Kong clone)

Recommended Posts

It's funny, but my first experience with Mario was at a cocktail Crazy Kong cab at a local arcade in Toronto -- I didn't see the real Donkey Kong 'til later. To this day I still prefer Crazy Kong over DK. The sound effects were way cooler, even if there was no background ditty. :-)

I have heard that from a few people. I had never seen this one before (my sheltered childhood consisted of just a few arcades). Do you happen to remember if the marquee looks like the one I have, or was it the one listed on klov.com?

Just curious.

The CK that was in my local pizza place when I was a kid had the marquee that's on KLOV. In my local places CK showed up more often than DK. None that I can remember had the marquee on yours though.

I also saw Crazy Kong before I saw Donkey Kong. As a matter of fact I remeber thinking that Donkey Kong was a copy of Crazy Kong instead of the other way around. It's been too long ago to be 100% certain, but I think the one I played was in a woodgrain cab with the marquee that yours has. I could easily be wrong about that, but your cab rings a bell in the old grey matter while the one on KLOV does not.

I'm sure you're sick of hearing this out of me, but I'd be all over that if you were closer. I'm probably one of the few who actually prefers Crazy Kong over Donkey Kong.

Well, I played it on a cocktail cab so there was no marquee to speak of, just artwork under the glass -- but I can say it was nothing like your marquee. I don't remember much -- this was around 1982 or so -- but the KLOV artwork seems closer to what I do remember.
