Dissapointed By A Classic: Revenge of Shinobi

Recommended Posts

Yesturday night I went to EB Games after going on Thursday and Purchasing World Series Baseball 2k3 (XBOX) and seeing Castle of Illusion for the Genesis. I go in and purchase Castle of Illusion and the guy tells me that its buy one get one free, so I go back to the bin and remember seeing Revenge of Shinobi, so I go back to the bin pick it up and pay for everything! :D

The worst is yet to come!

I get home and hook uo the Genny and sit through 3 levels of Castle of Illusion and when I had enough I put Revenge of Shinobi and after 5 minutes I was ike wow this game sucks!! :( I google up revenge of shinobi and I see that people rate it very high, ect ect, but it didnt make an impression on me!! Im keeping it just beacause its a Black Box/Lable 1989 Release Cart!! :D

But yet I sigh!!

Je-je:D Try Madden 2003 and lest se who gets bashed? :D

I did however find some cheats, so this should make the game more "interesting"

Im going to give it a second chance after my finals are over, ohh and Eric as soon as I get a car Im there buddy!! :D

I keep having the opposite reaction. I hear from people how great some modern game is, play it and say,"Jeez this isn't as good as Jumpman, HERO or Revenge of Shinobi."

Just because other people like a game, even a majority, it doesn't mean you will like it too. There's nothing wrong with having different opinion. :)

Which version do you have? The best way to tell does your Godzillla have skin. But anyway I have played all the Shinobi games on the Genesis. Revenge is just one of those games either you like it or hate it. I recommend if you can find it Shinobi 3 it's a much more challenging game and besides that there is much more action.

This one of the first 2 games (otherbeing Golden Axe 2) I got when I got my Genny back in the day. I loved both games, but I could never beat ROS, just too damn hard, and the first game I ever played with the highly fun double jump

Revenge of shinobi isint bad its just not as good as every ones makes it out to be. Really it may have been great in its day but compared to 3 its just not fun anymore. Plus its to hard for most people (including myself).

If only I could get everyone who thinks Halo2 is the best thing since sliced bread to understand that. :P

I'm with ya, I found it just like the 1st one, merely OK at best.

Every time I play Revenge of Shinobi, I start thinking "Man, I'd be having so much mroe fun with Ninja Gaiden."

And then I go play Ninja Gaiden.

So Revenge of Shinobi exists to make me play Ninja Gaiden.

I rented this game a couple times back then. I never really liked it, but I thought it was almost okay. The funky bosses like Spiderman are pretty interesting. It's better than Ninja Gaiden in my opinion, but that's not saying much. It seems martial arts games generally aren't much fun. The only exception I can think of is Kung Fu.

Shinobi 2 alot like many games today got far to much critical aclaim and a ton of peopel purchased it. Now why didnt that happen with 3? I mean 3 is way better.

Which Ninja Gaiden is the question.. The arcade beat-em-up? (which of course was around the same time as arcade Shinobi, which the Genesis version is a 'successor' to. Or, the NES platformers. :)

According to a Shinobi Fan Site I have version 2 (Sega Gives Credit to Spider-Man, its a 1989,1990 Copyright and my Godzilla has Skin)

But Im going to give Revenge of Shinobi a second chance over the winter break. :D I also plan to buy Mystic Defender, Sonic and Kuckles (had this game before but I traded it), Fogotten Worlds, Kid Chamaleon and Shinobi III!! :)

So you're telling me you weren't caught up in the arcade hype of the game (and it's ultra coolness at the time) and were excited to hear it was getting ported to the NES.. but then were at once dissapointed to see the translation in Nintendo Power... then realized after trying it when it was released a couple months later that you liked it as well? Must've been just me :P

/me looks around.

I was EIGHT when Ninja Gaiden NES came out.

I was still working on the level of "whatever's in the entry to the grocery store while mom's getting food" and "what's at the pizza place this friday night."

Neither one ever had Ninja Gaiden arcade that I know of.

And my first home console after the Vectrex was an SNES. So I missed the whole original NES release, really. When I got my NES(from a friend), all the stuff still in the stores was mere months from going on clearance.

And when I DID find out there was an arcade game, and tried it, I was... unimpressed. It's just no fun to me.

Yeah I was in college at the time and it was one of the 'hits' in the school pizza joint undereath the cafeteria :P

Did you play it emulated though? The control scheme is kind of wacky with the button on the joystick (to grasp) and the the other things.. so there are some moves that might not be immediately obvious like flipping over enemies and throwing them by the neck, sword moves, hanging on posts and either kicking from them or jumping from one to the other. I mean they get obvious after some plays but not just on cursory tries..

I mean it aint the greatest game, but hey.. it was good for it's time :D

The game over countdown on the arcade game really screwed me up, it still kind of freaks me out.

Yes, I emulated it.

And I do admit that the controls weren't really clear. There was no in-game tutorial, and some of the buttons don't have immediatly obvious reactions.

The brawler-type stuff isn't my fav genre ever anyways.
