Albert #3 Posted December 14, 2004 I think it's safe to say that as it hasn't come back by now, that it's very likely not coming back at all. It would be nice to see an alternative to eBay for video game items (especially since they are often quick to delete auctions for prototype items), but eBay is a tough juggernaut to compete against. ..Al
Tempest #4 Posted December 14, 2004 It would be nice to see an alternative to eBay for video game items (especially since they are often quick to delete auctions for prototype items), but eBay is a tough juggernaut to compete against. True, but it can't last forever. Eventually something will come and either dethrone eBay or at least give it some competition. The problem with Bidiots was that it wasn't well advertised and was video game specific. While there are a ton of gaming auctions on ebay at any given time, I don't think you can make an auction site just for them. Anything that's going to beat ebay is going to need some major financial backing like Yahoo did. Something will come along, it's just a matter of time. dvdguy #5 Posted December 14, 2004 I'm surprised there hasn't been a full scale anti-Ebay type site yet. You'd think with the growing dissatisfaction from full time Ebayers about fees and PayPal, etc that someone could easily win a great deal of them over by having lower fees and fixing some of the many problems Ebay doesn't seem to care about (feedback, for example). Spirantho #6 Posted December 15, 2004 I'm not surprised at all. Any new site has to get two things to succeed: Buyers and Sellers. Getting the seller on board is easy - offer lower listing fees, better services etc. But getting the buyer on board is incredibly difficult. And of course without the sheer number of buyers that eBay has, no seller is going be attracted, so they all go back to eBay where the buyers are. It's a vicious circle - an auction site won't succeed until it has a number of buyers/sellers, and it won't have a good number of buyers/sellers until it succeeds. Taking on eBay is suicide at the moment, you may as well take on a small company like Microsoft...
Tempest #7 Posted December 15, 2004 Taking on eBay is suicide at the moment, you may as well take on a small company like Microsoft... Ahh but people ARE taking on Microsoft and winning. Apple and Linux are more popular now than ever. True they've only made a tiny dent, but it proves that it can be done. The same thing will be true for ebay. Just because the first attempt didn't work out, doesn't mean another wont succeed. In Japan, Yahoo killed off eBay, so it is possible. Tempest
thx1138 #8 Posted December 15, 2004 Well, www.qxl.com is still just about hanging on, but it isn't going places either. I listed a ton of decent stuff, at bargain prices, and got no bids. Back to fee-pay I'm afraid.
