sandmountainslim #1 Posted December 19, 2004 Hi all, I am new to the forum but not new to Atari's (still playing the 2600 I got for xmas in '82) Someone tells me Infogrames is trying to kill the homebrew scene, is this true? Why would they wanna suck the life out of the best system ever created? Also the console I have is one of the all black models is this more or less desired than the woodgrain? Thanks for your time SMS

Paul Slocum #3 Posted December 19, 2004 Not homebrews in general, but those that infringe on their copyrights. They have the legal right, but it's pretty lame. Not like hacks and ports for the 2600 and 5200 are going to hurt sales of their new systems and retro-comps. I've wondered if it would be possible to start selling some hacks again if the hack carts were made out of the original cartridges that they're hacks of (and this was made clear on the store website.) Like: make all Combat Rocks out of Combat cartridges. Then effectively all that's being done is modification of a Combat cartridge which doesn't violate copyright (although if the original Atari board is removed from the cartridge and replaced with a new board, the original would have to be destroyed). -paul
sandmountainslim #4 Posted December 19, 2004 Ok, I thought they were trying to kill homebrews in general, I have never played a homebrew or a hack but intend to start immediatly , already have my copy of x3volux enroute and looking over the homebrews to see which one I wanna buy first. Red 5 #5 Posted December 19, 2004 Also, to answer the question about your system, the all black one is known to most as the Vader version. The system that is probably the most popular and most wanted amongst collectors is the 'Heavy Sixer' which is the 6 switch woodgrain model. It is heavier than the regular 6 switch and was made in Sunnyvale California. It is slightly different looking than the regular wood grain 6 switch. (The molding in the front is rounded. Hard to explain without pictures.) Yours would lie somewhere in between. The 4 switch woodgrain and Vader usually bring in the same amount in auctions. Basically the middle of the road. The top being the heavy sixer and the bottom being the Atari Jr. Hope this helps. Welcome to AtariAge !
sandmountainslim #6 Posted December 19, 2004 Thanks for all the help, glad I found Atariage and my wife will be glad I have found a place to get rid of extra money I dont know how long my old machine will last but this will be its 22nd Christmas, no matter what system has been "hot" for all these years (PS2, Super NES, NES etc. my old Atari has always been hooked up right beside em and has outlasted most, It will be great to start getting new games again, then maybe I can give Kaboom a rest!! liveinabin #8 Posted December 19, 2004 I do like the black junior. I have one (though I performed a fairly bad composite mod. on it - whoops! - still, I DO have the proper box for it as well).
sandmountainslim #9 Posted December 19, 2004 Also could you fellas suggest which homebrew would be the best one to pick up first? I like shooter games so I ordered x3volux have any of you played it? but it is a hack of astro blast istead of a homebrew so if anyone could suggest a good homebrew for me I will be sure and pick one up. Paul Slocum #10 Posted December 19, 2004 If you like shooters, probably Oystron or Thrust. -paul
sku_u #11 Posted December 20, 2004 If you like shorter games, Climber 5 and Space Treat Deluxe are a great way to go. If you pick up Thrust, make sure you pick up a footpedal as well. It makes a big difference in gameplay.
