How long will the age of Atari last?

Recommended Posts

As a newcomer to the world of homebrews and hacks I have been reading backthreads trying to catch up on the atari scene and one constant I keep reading about is threats and copyright laws etc. Do you folks see the homebrews and hacks as on pretty stable ground right now? I was terribly excited when I found out about the homebrew scene and places that actually sell them in cartridge form, now I am bummed out after reading about Infogrames and their tactics, I hope to see the games keep coming for years and years (at least long enough for me to buy em all) Someone tell me I am all worked up over nothing! Anyhoo thanks for letting me rant.

Homebrews aren't in much danger unless they infringe on someone else's copyrights. If they're original works, or derivative works that are different enough to avoid infringement, then they're perfectly safe; Infogrames don't want to kill the homebrew scene (and couldn't if they wanted to). They're just trying to shut out the hacks and homebrews that are remakes or hacks of games Infotari still hold the copyrights to.

Not that I'm condoning it. I think it's petty and heartless. I'm surprised they didn't go after the ROMs here like Activision did. (Don't go yelling at them, tho; at least they had a good reason in the form of Anthology. :-)) All the same, it's within Atari's right to do so. I just wish they'd have decided to leave it alone, considering they're alienating a good portion of the very audience they want to reach in doing so. (Mind you, the Flashback is doing a pretty good job of that all by itself. :-))

I think the Homebrew scene gets stronger every year. Look at the number of high quality homebrews released this year. And with great outlets like the Atari Age store and Packrat VG, there is a means by which the average player can access these awesome games. Interest in homebrews and new games appears to be at a peak right now. I am VERY optimistic about the future of the Classic Atari scene, its what my awards all about! :)

Back when I bought an Atari 2600, my dream was to make my own game. I bought a book about making your own games c1977 which meant wiring up some ICs and having a primitive pong.

Not in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that through emulation and later the Cuttle Carts can players enjoy the games and make their own!

Hacks are interesting .. Homebrews are great!!

Although Atari (Infrogrames) has made it known that hacks are not in their favor, they have informally released one hack on the Atari Classics 80-in-0ne CD. Zach Medley's hack of Combat: Tank AI.

Is this the only new 2600 release by Atari in .. 14 years??

Wow- I didn't know that! I was really looking forward to buying a copy of Tank AI from the Atari Age store, but figured that it was a dead issue now. I have the PC version of the Atari Classics and the PS2 version- which one or ones is Tank AI on? I don't remember seeing it mentioned on the package.

Maybe so. Also, technically speaking Polo was 'officially released' as we got permission from JTS-Atari at the time to include it on the Stella CD version 1.

Both. It's on the Xbox version too. You won't find it on the main menu though. Try to find some bonus material on Combat.
