tyranthraxus #1 Posted December 23, 2004 I havn't looked into the technical side of this at all but as I happen to have a dead CV joystick and 5200 joystick I was curious if it would be possible to mod these sticks to work on the other console? Be it either a hack of the output wires or swapping some of the guts out between the two?
doubledown #2 Posted December 23, 2004 I'm sure it's possible, but why. The 5200 controller is trash. Not to say that the ColecoVision controllers are all that spectacular, but at least the stick is self centering. Plus with the 5200 controller you'd lose overlay compatibility. Besides, there are a ton of used ColecoVision controllers available, not to mention some of the better 3rd party controllers. If nothing else pick up one of the Super Action controllers, they're pretty nice. Here's a link to my website that has a list of most of the available 3rd party controllers. Note: those aren't prices to buy, but refurbishing prices. http://www.geocities.com/double_down_on_11...lecoVision.html My personal favorites are the Suncom Joy Sensor, and the SpectraVideo Quickshot III. If you're interested I've got 8 or 9 of the SpeectraVideo controllers in stock that I'm selling for $30.00 completely refurbished and 100% guaranteed working. christianscott27 #3 Posted December 24, 2004 i can think of a few mod-minded posters who could explain this in great depth but the long and short of it is no. take the joysticks, its analog (5200) vs digital (CV). in other words if you crack open a 5200 controller you'll see that left/right and up/down are essentially two paddle controllers or pots. a coleco controller has the usual pushing left hits this bump on the board that sends "left" down the wire. beyond that there are likely to be issues with power, signal and wires to cope with. theres pretty much nothing that cant be done if you have the skills and time to do it but this is akin to turning a tape deck into a CD player. tyranthraxus #4 Posted December 24, 2004 Well I prefer the 5200 stick to the coleco one and find the SA controllers to be well... crappola as well as all of the offical 3rd party CV controllers except for that rare arcade style stick. Worrying about analog vs digital wasn't part of the plan. Tonight I will take the joysticks apart. What I would like to be able to do is place the joystick part in the 5200 case and try to wire the keypad and fire buttons to work but the while membrane scheme of the 52 I think sabotages against doing such paste and glue job. I know you know quite a bit about the Colecovision. I was wondering what you think about the Gim 4 button fire command controllers? I have one coming my way soon and love the 2 button controller I picked up for the 2600.

I have one coming my way soon and love the 2 button controller I picked up for the 2600. I'm familar with the Gim controller. I don't have one, nor have I used one, they don't look all that spectacular to me. I was bidding on one once on Ebay, but it went higher than I thought it was worth. I'll get one some day, I'm sure, but visually it doesn't really impress me.

I have to say that I recently got a ColecoVision system that included a pair of the normal controllers and a pair of the Super Action controllers and I have to agree with you. People have been crapping on the 5200 controllers for 23 years and I don't get it. The ColecoVision controllers are great? Not! The Super Action controllers are great? They're better than the stock ColecoVision controllers but still not that great. I also got an Intellivision for christmas. Oh yea, that disk is awesome... yea right. Don't get me wrong, both the ColecoVision and Intellivision are fine systems with some really fun games, but come on, you're telling me that their controllers are better than the 5200? I don't think so...
