Nintendo to release multimedia adapter for GBA & DS

Less than a week after Sony's launch of the PlayStation Portable in Japan, Nintendo has announced that it will release a new adapter for the Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo DS. Tentatively named Play-yan, the adapter will let the handhelds play back MPEG-4 video and MP3 audio files much like the PSP. No date or price has been officially set, but Nintendo is looking at a release date of mid-February and a price of close to 5,000 yen ($48).

 

Nintendo's Play-yan will use an SD card instead of a Memory Stick Duo, like the PSP. While the released designs of Play-yan aren't set in stone, the adapter at the current time seems to be about the same shape and size as a GBA cartridge. The SD card will snap into the side of the Play-yan, making it irremovable as long as the Play-yan is firmly set in the handheld's cartridge slot. And because the Play-yan doesn't come with any PC connectivity, owners will need an SD Card writer/reader to record data from a PC.

Nintendo has no current plans to release this stateside.

 

It will work on the GBA SP but apparently not the normal GBA

 

You're either going to have to wait for an announcement from Nintendo

or import it like I will if I have to.

 

This is all from memory, I don't know if thats the same article or if its a

newer one or what.

If it doesnt hit state side lets see if we can save by buying 2 or something like that since we both want one of these!!

yeah but you have to convert your media files to a proper format

so it will play, so thats inconvienient.

 

With this new play yan or whatever, its ready to go copy and paste.

How can it work on an SP but not a normal GBA?

 

The only relevant diffrence I know of is physical, and anything that can fit into a DS has to be able to fit a GBA non-SP.

Taht would be logical, but it's not what's been said(the gamespot article says not compatible with normal GBA too).

You're not and you are, many people already own an SP or a DS so that cost list isn't completely accurate unless you're buying everything at once. If you counted the purchase price of the unit everytime you bought something additional that makes the price of games $180 for the DS and well past $300 everytime you bought a PSP game.

But everyone's big gripe with the PSP is the price and now everyone is going to shell out money for *another* add-on for a Nintendo handheld that brings it right up to the gasp price of the PSP. I must be stupid cause I just don't get it.
