Question about the EXP port on older Genesises...

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what pins are on it?

Obviously nothing was made to use it, but I'm wondering what's there that COULD have been used.

It is used for the Sega CD of course.

Did you forget that it came out?

That's the card-edge connector on the side.

I mean the 9-pin D connector on the back.

BTW, I originally got my first Genesis precisely BECAUSE of the SegaCD. I wouldn't consider hooking one up without it.

It's not forgotten.

i know what he means, it really does look like a joystick port on the back of the console. i remember finding one this summer with a collector friend and we were wondering if it was a hardware hack....until we found another one a few booths over. my model 1 gen doesnt have such a port so it must be a very early ed. thing

Yeah, my first genny had that. The ones I got later didn't. I've googled around, but never found a pinout. Grrrr. I'm tempted to open it up and trace the lines.

lets go after this mystery :)

digging into old newsgroup posts (should be the resource of choice for any gaming trivia) i've found two schools of thought, the afore mentioned japanese modem and then theres the mysterious RGB out!

The 9 pin connector on the back of a Genesis is for a RGB adaptor

that Pony Toy in Los Angeles carries. I do not know the price off

hand, but Pony Toy is in the Yaohan store on Alameda and 3rd St.

Tonight I modifyed my Genesis with almost TOTAL SUCCESS!!!.

What I did was I disconnected the 9-pin modem port on the Genesis

and made that port a RGB monitor connection...Works like a dream!....

Here's the scoop.

Genesis A/V connector (looking from back of Genesis):

                                  Blue

                                   |

Negative Combined Sync---- >    0   |   0   <-----Red

      Composite Video --->      0  0  0   <-----Audio

                Green ---->      0 0 0  <----+ 5 Volts

                                   ^

                                   |

                                   |

                                Ground

After Opening the Genesis and unsoldering the 9-pin modem connector,

I connected the following A/V pins to it.

Genesis former modem connector (looking from back of Genesis):

                        5  4  3  2  1

                        o  o  o  o  o

                          o  o  o  o

                          9  8  7  6

Connected as follows:

DB-9

     Pin                         A/V Function

       1                            RED

       2                            GREEN

       3                            BLUE

       4                            Negative Combined Sync

       5                            (Did not connect)

       6                            (Did not connect)

       7                            (Did not connect)

       8                            (Did not connect)

       9                            Ground

I connected this configuration to a NEC MultiSync....Here are the

pin configs for the Multisync:

DB-9

       Pin                       Pin Function

       1                            RED

       2                            GREEN

       3                            BLUE

       4                            H. Sync

       5                            V. Sync

       6                            Red Ground

       7                            Green Ground

       8                            Blue Ground

       9                            Ground

Here is the small problem that I am having....When I use OR just hook

the new RGB video out (even with the Genesis off)...I get a annoying hum

in my speakers....While the RGB cable and the A/V cable are plugged in,

at the same time, I get a kind of rastering type of faint image on the A/V

screen...I also still have the humm.

I also think that the picture is a bit degraded on the composite out.

this one really gets me wondering

I'm in need of one of the older Sega Genesis systems which has the 9-pin

"EXT" connector on the back, and anything bought in the last year or so is

their new model which does not have the "EXT" connector on the back. Sega

removed it and nobody noticed because there aren't any games which make use

of the connector, but us software development types have other uses for it :)

this guy seems to have looked into it

The early Genesis/Mega Drive models had a 9-pin female "D" connector

on the back marked "EXT". In programming terms it can be thought of as

a third controller port, and has the same pinouts - six bidirectional

data lines, a switching line, plus 5 volts and ground lines.

anyways i hope theres more to this RGB mod thing, sounds interesting.

Modem port seems to be a statement of what it looks like(a 9-pin serial port) as opposed to usage.

RGB out wouldn't surprise me, except that the RGB lines are on the multi-out connector too.

There is a wire that comes out of the 32x that I beleive goes there, It was also use as a modem port for SegaNet

no, youre thinking of the standard AV port

the first run of genesis consoles had an extra 9 pin port shaped like a controller port on the back (the other feature of this first run were the words "High Definition Graphics" on the outer circle surrounding the cart slot. Both of these features were removed by 1991.
