thegamezmaster #1 Posted December 29, 2004 Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem with their PS2. First it stopped auto loading the games, then when you would turn it on the browser/system config screen would come up. Then you would have to open the disc drawer, insert the disc, then press the bottom drawer button, then you get a reading disc message that seemed to last forever and then the disc icon would appear, move to that then the game would load. Now the unit won't even read the disc. Can't get it to work at all. Anyone else have this happen?
kemsted #2 Posted December 29, 2004 Do you have it standing vertically? Ive heard that this can cause the problem with certain games, so try laying it the other way if thats how you had your PS2. -kemsted
thegamezmaster #3 Posted December 30, 2004 I tried it both ways and no luck. Electronic Boutique used to swap nonworking decks for working ones. Does anyone know if they still do this or any place that does this?
Cobra Commander #4 Posted December 30, 2004 Mine does this every couple of weeks, sounds like a dusty lense. Get some caned air, I like to leave the CD tray open so I can blow air in their too.
Brad2600 #5 Posted December 30, 2004 How long have you had your PS2? For a while, you could send your PS2 in and Sony would repair it free of charge, past warranty or not. Not sure if they still do this though.
+-^CrossBow^- #6 Posted December 30, 2004 Sony still offers this service. But I don't know for how long, now that they have the newer slimmer version of the PS2. I doubt they still make the older case style at all any more so they will probably only offer it until they run out of the older style models. Maybe they will sub with newer slim version...which would suck in my opinion... But last I heard, a guy as recently as last month was still able to ship his unit to Sony and they shipped him a replacement new PS2 for only the cost of shipping it to them. I believe he said he had bought his original PS2 sometime back when they were first introduced.
Classic Pac #7 Posted December 30, 2004 I've heard this problem more than once, it was even in a past issue of Game Pro. All I can suggest is that you call Sony and see what they can do.

thegamezmaster #10 Posted January 28, 2005 I tried calling their customer service line and after about 15 minutes on the phone and being put on hold, the sony person said they would waive the repair fee, gave me a reapir number and said send it into the address the provided. So $13 and about two weeks later they sent me back my PS2 totally repaired. It's like it's brand new! Talk about being stoked! Just thought I'd share this good news with everyone. A great big thank you to everyone's help and input on this! Thanks again everyone!
Stingray #11 Posted January 28, 2005 That's great! I'm glad to hear that Sony is still doing this. -S
Famicoman #12 Posted January 28, 2005 I'm glad Sony has kept this feature. My PS2 might have an "accident" now that I know it can be repaired to origional form.
thegamezmaster #13 Posted January 29, 2005 Just call their customer service number, I don't remember but I got it off the internet and tell them all the problems you've had, I went through two of them, and see what they say, can't hurt. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I've put mine through the paces and it works great!
RJ #14 Posted January 29, 2005 the sony person said they would waive the repair fee Any indication why? Are they doing this for everyone who calls or just special cases?
thegamezmaster #15 Posted January 29, 2005 I'm not sure really. I told them this was my second ps2 that had the same problems, he put me on hold for a few minutes and when he came back on, he said they'd waive the fee and all I had to do was pay for shipping which was $12. So I think they where just trying to keep a customer happy, which they did and I am.
Cobra Commander #16 Posted January 30, 2005 the sony person said they would waive the repair fee Any indication why? Are they doing this for everyone who calls or just special cases? Cause there aint no money in hardware. If your hardware dont work then you cant buy new software, wich is were the real money is. And there just keeping you happy wich is really cool. Couple that with free online play (mostly) and they will keep me as a customer.

Yes, they make money on hardware sales. Not a lot, but enough. As I understand it, the free repairs are because htey got sued over the hardware failures. It was part of the settlement. CPUWIZ #18 Posted February 10, 2005 Can someone that had their PS2 fixed for free please post the exact phone number they used and tell me exactly what you told them? Not sure about the PS2, but it may be an easy fix like the XBOX. Buy a new drive, open and replace?
RJ #20 Posted February 11, 2005 I emailed them, which in turn requested I call them & speak 1 to 1 w/ a rep: 1-800-345-SONY (7669). They ask your personal info (name, addr, phone#), PS2 model/barcode #s. They ask your PS2's specific problem(s), & if you've modded it, which may determine whether or not they're "nice" to you. They didnt ask if I tried fixing it as outlined on websites/gaming mags, & I didnt give any info they didnt want. They give you a service request # to be included on a piece of paper taped to the unit describing specifically what is wrong, along w/ the info above (personal & unit #s.) I was told told to ship UPS or insured mail & t'd take 10 business days to complete. Good deal if you ask me!
RJ #21 Posted February 11, 2005 Oh, & I was told to write "NO FEE OFFER" on the paper too.

Starscream #25 Posted February 12, 2005 That sounds like a good price too me... MS wanted $99 to fix my first XBOX's LAN port... NOT an easy job at all, so I'd say, short of a mobo replacement, that's a fair price.
