Atari, any chance for a new game system?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just a thought... with Infrogrames (now Atari) starting to make more and more money, and with the fact that they have now taken Atari as their primary name... any chance that they may one day release a new system?

They did release the flashback which could have been somewhat of a way to test the waters... I dunno. I'm sure I'm going to get flamed.. "Atari is gone man!!!" or whatever, but I'm just curious. As much as I hate the French, I think I'd definitely buy a new Atari system if one came out. Anyone know if they actually have anything that they're planning? Or even a rumor?

heheh

No, I very much doubt anyone else is going to get into hardware any time soon.

And don't 'hate the French', that's gutter mentality, rise above it.

Infogrames, however, suck ass. For one thing, they've stolen a piece of my artwork to advertise that Flashback thing.

Infogrames isn't doing all that well financially. You really have to have deep pockets to create another game console in this day and age. I read an article that stated that Microsoft's spent $2 billion on the Xbox so far, and they still haven't made any profit on it yet. (Isn't it nice to say something like this, without being flamed by Adrian M?)

Eh, I hate the French because of my experiences I had on vacations there. My entire family on my dad's side is from Holland, so I try to visit as often as possible. Whenever I go to Paris to visit my Aunt, the residents there are usually very rude. They turn their noses up at me... hahah. I'm fairly normal, I dress conservatively... nothing out of the ordinary. So I just don't get it. I've been visiting there since I was like 10 years old... it used to be in the 80s they would tell me how much the US sucked and how Russia would take us over (I always got a kick out of that), then they would make fun of the US because our president had an affair... etc..

Anyway, I actually think Atari / Infrogrames has done quite well. Actually, I think Infrogrames has done SO MUCH MORE with Atari than JTS or Hasbro has done. Certainly, someone could do better, but they're certainly getting the name out there...

Is Atari Games (the arcade guys) still a name? Or did that division disolve? I know they split from the regular Atari a while back....

I'd be pretty upset too with the fact that your artwork was stolen, however, I suspect that has more to do with a single graphic artist who sucks and has no artistic talent and felt it would be easier to steal than create his own. I doub't that any of the upper management in Atari had any idea that the artwork was lifted.

Oh well.. one can hope....

I figured that was the case even though I didn't know it to be a fact. I have to give Microsoft props for it though... they refuse to let go. They are sticking with the system, and plugging away at it...

Microsoft has so much deeper pockets than Sony does... so Sony's trying to fight an uphill battle.

I don't own either, so I don't know which one is better....

What piece of art work?

Heh.

Not to get political, but I think the French are pretty comfortable with powerful politicians having mistresses and what not. What amused them was how big a deal we made it.

Despite my personal irritation w/ their lawerly ways...I dunno. Frankly, Atari (at least the non-Arcade bit) had been coasting on its early-80s successes for a LONG time. When the 7800 was out and shipping w/ frickin' Pole Position...

Anyways, I doubt Infogrames is in the position to release a new console being strictly a game developer, I don't think they'd really want to, I think they'd rather continue millking off those plug-n-play joystick things.

I did the box art for the recent AtariAge release of Saboteur. They've used that art in their little ad. movie for the Flashback, you can see it at Atari.com. Buggers.

@82-t/a - fair enough, at least you've been there. My bad :)

They completely ripped off my Saboteur manual as well. I'm pretty pissed about it.

have you guys talked to them about it? I wouldn't think they would really have the right to do it, though I am no lawyer.

The two of you need to contact a lawyer to see what can be done about. What they did was definetly illegal.

I've emailed Atari. Not with legal threats, but with just a simple email detailing what's happened and a request for them to get back to me and sort it out. Heck, for all I know, their design dept. may have thought the picture came with the game. I'll let you know how it pans out.

I'm sure it is a genuine mistake on Atari's part - after all they are only cashing in on Atari of old's success and probably don't even realise.

In many ways you should also be proud that they chose to use your stuff - it's like a seal of approval :D

Oh yeah, but I have to be asked first.

Sorry for derailing this thread, I seem to have a knack for that :)

Doubt it very much, just look at what happened at SEGA since they dropped the Dreamcast. If you discount the recent takeover, their making record profits. I heard on the radio when E3 was going on, of how someone from that station asked a SEGA rep 'Would they ever get back in to the hardware bussines' They said all the rep did was laugh.

I know what you were thinking, it's the same as the rest of us thought when the Flashback unit came out. But in reality it is a way for Atari to sell old software, frankly I think they got the idea for this from the Jakks Pacific line of all in one gaming units.

Infogrames cant be making that much money, EA hasnt bought them out yet. :D

These flashback games are probably pretty cheap to make too, they didnt have to come up with any thing new. The're just riding the nostalgia/retro gaming wave. I personaly hope they never make a new console, because all the cart prices would go up due to increased demand, if it were reverse compatible.

Ugh! I never thought about the cart prices going up. That would be BAD. :( Then e-bay would just get worse...

Eh' date=' I hate the French because of my experiences I had on vacations there.[/quote']

Sorry to go off-topic here, but I just had to pipe in. I've been to France 12 times in the last 15 years and have never had a bad experience. I've found the French people I've met casually (I know no one there) to be warm, generally intelligent, and great people. I've found that any attempt to first try to speak French -- no matter how bad you are at it, and I am bad -- genuinely endears you to French people. Of course, it also helps if you dress with a little style, aren't fat and don't have a chip on your shoulder about how French people are going to hate you. They're used to it, they know they have a rep for being rude and can sense your hostility a mile away. I've witnessed countless Americans acting like total idiots, getting some rudeness back and having no idea why they received such treatment. I've also received knowing winks from French people after they've acted that way.

I know you probably have pre-conceived notions about how I've acted towards them, or how I dress, etc. But I'm clean cut, I always dress appropriately (I'm not a Goth, Emo, or whatever term you could use. I wear Old Navy, Gap, and stuff from JC Pennys). I'm extremely polite, and I always make a huge effort to assimilate to any culture of any country that I visit. (Just as I would want someone to do to me in the United States).

I cannot tell you why I would be treated that way. I've always prided myself on trying to be humble all the time, being a listen rather than a talker. I've never had anyone suggest that I've got a chip on my shoulder.

Takeovers are a simple matter of who has the most money. Take the GE Universal meger for example.

If your looking for carts, I say try your local video game shop, you can get a fair bargin. If any of you live in the Chicago area look for a store call "Music Recyclery" they have games and systems from 2600 to current ones all at good prices go check them out and this is from a guy who only shops there.

I've refused to buy any Sega and Nintendo machine on the grounds that they're made by Japanese people. At least it's not Blacks, hey? Pass me them Freedom Fries!

Atari don't have nearly enough income to support the R&D, manufacture and advertisment for a new console. Highly unlikely. C'est la vie.

Well that would be pretty dumb.

Since nearly every single game system made since the 80s was assembled or manufactured in Japan. (the exception being the Jaguar).

Our neighbor threw a block party a couple weeks ago and there was a new couple a few doors down where the husband was French. Even HE said that people in Paris were rude, but explained a lot of it was burnout from all the tourists. He also said going in Spring was the best chance to catch them in a good mood.

As for new hardware, I don't think so. IMHO most developers dream of getting rich by producing the next top-of-the-chart series a la Grand Theft Auto.
