Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat?

Recommended Posts

So? Which did you like better on the 16 bit generation?

I always preferred SFII over Mortal Kombat and I always liked the orginal SFII much more than the later "hyper" crap they did.

I had gotten my SNES originally just because SFII was out on it and it's still a beautiful port of the arcade game. I know some folks like MK better because of the added violence but that wasn't enough for me. MK always felt less fluid than SFII to me.

SF2 all the way. Mortal Kombat has it's fans but to me the gameplay is just "tap tap tap". sf2 controls once you learn them become intuitive and free flowing. The half circles and charges you have to do for special moves really do a good job of making you FEEL like you're controlling a characters movements with the joystick. It has a fluid gameplay that tap tap tap just doesn't do that for me.

That being said, my brother is an MK FREAK. So I understand how people can like that game.. :D

I was a fan of SF2 in the 16 bit days. I didn't enjoy MK as much because I wasn't so willing to learn a different fighting controls but found the characters and entangled background stories to be interesting. I think the latest Mortal Kombats are pretty good.

SF2, no doubt, for this very reason. Always liked SF2 more. I still have Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES and play it occasionally, but SF2 Turbo and the amazing SF3 3rd Strike (and SF Alpha 3) get much more play time.

If we're talking about SF2 against MK1, I'd answer SF2.

If the contest is between any of the SF2 series and MK2, I'll answer MK2.

Ill admit im not a fan of ither of them to be honest i always like samuria showdown and fatul fury alot more. In the arcades that is not there lousy genesis and snes counter parts.

I've always loved both games actually. SF II was lots of fun for extended tournament play amongst friends, and MK was good for shocking those who are easily offended, hehe. SF II definately has it over MK on the gameplay, but MK 2 was simply an AMAZING game. Just mastering Shang Tsung alone could literally take hundreds of hours. I'll always love both franchises, though, and still play both of 'em from time to time to this day.

I started with MK1 and then went on to MK2. I still think MK2 is the best MK game ever.

I also played a lot of SF2:CE on Genesis. That was my first long exposure to that game. I loved it for awhile and still play the occasional SF2 game.

Ultimately I like MK2 better for the realistic graphics and similar character moves. And the fatalaties never get boring for me. Especially Scorpion's slice and dice move. :D

SFII, and in particular Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

The Mortal Kombat series (including MKII) just doesn't have the depth that the SF2 series has. Capcom has fine-tuned the gameplay over the years too, while Mortal Kombat has gotten less interesting as time has gone on...

Fantastic debate idea!!!

I don't know. Street Fighter 2 had a smoother gameplay system but Mortal Kombat had better graphics and in my opinion had cooler characters and cooler moves. Street Fighter 2 may have been more important to the gaming world cause it could be argued that it paved the way for Mortal Kombat, but Mortal Kombat was more significant as a 90's pop culture icon at large because of all the press attention it got.

I don't know, on the one hand you've got adaquately cool characters with adaquately cool moves and locales with great gameplay vs. a game with only really good gameplay (as opposed to great) but with a really nice dark/macabre ambience and cooler characters and cooler moves (who can resist "FINISH HIM!"?)

This is not an easy one. But I have to cast my vote with Mortal Kombat

As far as Mk1 vs. Mk2, that's a toughy too... I guess I like Mk2 better as a game, but it lost some of the dark and macabre... MK3 was okay, but I didn't like it as well as the first two. I'm not nearly as crazy about the newer installments of either series as the old ones though...

I guess my all time top 3 favorite fighting games of all time are

1:Mk 2

2:Mk1

3: SF2 Turbo (it's nice to be able to play Bison vs. Bison)

I will always love them.

SF2 all the way. I don't like the newest MK's either, by far my favorite fighter is SFA3. Well, street fighter that is, as in my favorite fighter overall, Marvel vs Capcom 2.
