What's so special about this auction?????????????

Recommended Posts

Is yours one with the label or without? That wouild be one criteria I'd look at. Also would be the inclusion of the instruction manual.

Lastly, It's Christmas shopping season. That'll do it every time.

Three hundred bucks does seem quite steep, though...

I reckon that was bought in the UK from one of our main ebay sellers for under £50.00 about a month ago. I bid on it myself and seem to remember there being a slight rip in the upper left corner of the label.

Thats got to be the easiest $200 they ever made.

Also you should bear in mind that this is one of those games that appeals not only to Atari enthusiasts but to fans of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie.

Indeed the other auctions the winning bidder has placed bids on are all horror movie items - not videogames.

A fan of the movie may be prepared to spend more than an Atari collector because they "must have it". An Atari collector is interested in hundreds of atari games but a horror fan is only interested in a couple.

I'd say the guy... horror fan or not... Is a very "special" person indeed if he paid $300+ for TCM!!

Perhaps we'll see him/her at the next special olympics? DOH!!!

It's not too unusual for someone outside the realm of 2600 collecting to pay an unusually high amount for a game. Sometimes our hobby will overlap with someone's just a touch, usually due to a company having licensed the rights to some other property, as was the case with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. People bidding on these items may not know what they normally go for, as it may be the only 2600 game they ever bid on. Although in this case I bet the winner would also be on the lookout for Halloween as well.

I had someone win an Alien auction who didn't bid on it because they wanted to play the game, but because they were a huge collector of all things Alien. It was a loose cart, clearly stated in the auction, but the winner was hoping to get a box. So they definitely weren't familiar with Atari auctions. I did send him a scan of the Alien manual, which he was quite pleased with. I don't have the box, so there was nothing I could do about that (this was well before AtariAge hit the scene).

Some people simply won't be outbid at any price. I know people who are willing to pay anything if they want a rare item bad enough.

Myself, I tend to be more level headed and purchase what I can afford. I pretty much don't try to bid on rare items since I know that the price will go through the roof (ceiling, moon, universe, etc) for a rare item.

Surely a "complete" ET manual with a page missing (??) can't be all that rare.

I'd give 20 bucks tops. j/k

I might take a short video of myself ripping up mine and send him the file

Is it true Atari made more ET games than they made systems?

Funny thing about that, me and my friend were talking the other day, and he brought up that magazine, he was surprised when I told him I knew about it and we had a discussion on Atari games (he now calls me "The Atari Guru").

Wow. I bought my E.T. game for $1 and got the instructions for free. The guy bidding must really want to know how to play the game to bid $60 for the manual.

The guy who's selling this must see his honesty counter and think "Wow, theres quite a few people interested, there's probably going to be a bidding war near the close of the auction" when the only hits its got are probably from people who have read this thread.
