Enjoy! :)

What was it that made you able to finally convert this one? I know everyone said it was a total pain in the ass and not very likely to get converted to atari bankswitching methods do to some serious issues with the BIN.

Really? I can't remember, those ROMs are from June 2005.

Excellent! The list just keeps getting shorter and shorter! Does anyone know if the conversion problems with Mr. Do's Castle were ever corrected?

- All the Arcadia/Starpath Supercharger Games

- Mr. Do's Castle (converted, but doesn't 100% work)

- Megaboy

- Pitfall 2: Lost Caverns

Enjoy! :)

No bankswitching cartridge presently supports the release version of Toyshop Trouble (other than boards specifically constructed for 0840 banking).

I guess it wouldn't be hard to include 0840 in the next revision. Is the Toyshop Trouble ROM available so I could try if it fits in ? This scheme should require very little resources, so it may be possible to support it.

Can you point me to specs for 0840 banking? Is it in your blog? By the way, I'm hoping to learn 4A50 this weekend, so I can get my Sudoku WIP converted to it, and start back to work on it.

Hi John,

No bankswitching cartridge presently supports the release version of Toyshop Trouble (other than boards specifically constructed for 0840 banking).

I may have missed this but why did TT use another bankswitching scheme? What are the benefits to this one vs. the others?

From John's blog - Introducing 0840 EconoBanking

I've just built a cart using a new low-cost 8K banking scheme. Unlike other 8K designs which either require a programmable logic device or multiple logic chips, this design uses one 16-pin DIP, a 2.2K resistor, and a 100pF cap (and an EPROM of course).

What are the benefits to this one vs. the others?

Econobanking offers three benefits:

-1- It's cheaper and easier to build

-2- Because $1FF8-$1FF9 are not hotspots, code may use all the ROM up to $1FFB in both banks.

-3- Certain types of code that need to access data in both banks may be written in such a way as to get a speed boost, though the code receiving the speed boost would generally either have to be stored in both banks (at identical addresses) or else stored in ROM. While a bank switch normally costs 4 cycles, under 0840 banking it's possible to combine the banking function with certain other instructions so as to reduce the cost to one cycle or in some (admittedly rare) cases none.

For example, if the following code were running out of RAM starting at $08BE (which is a shadow of $00BC), the first LDA would come out of bank 0 and the second LDA would come out of bank 1.

 lda (ptr1),y
 sta GRP0
 lda (ptr2),y
 sta GRP1

Since any fetch from $0880-$08BF will switch to bank 0, and any fetch from $08C0-$08FF will switch to bank 1, one could avoid the costs of bank switching entirely.

Another, perhaps more useful, technique would be to do an indirect jump to an address in RAM. If the address is stored below $BF, the indirect jump could do a free bankswitch to bank 0. If above $C0, a free bankswitch to bank 1.

I don't know that any programmers would want to take advantage of these tricks, but they do exist.

Toyshop Trouble does not, as it happens, take advantage of #2 or #3. I think Albert's pretty happy about #1, though.

Mr. Do's! Castle is not 100% good. A ladder is misplaced on one level, but you can still climb where it is supposed to be.

I am sure some people who are eagerly waiting for a Kroko Cart might be able and willing to help you to speed up the process. Maybe you could let your customers (or others) do some pre- or post-processing?
