Tsukasa #1 Posted January 3, 2005 I have a version 4 ps2 that isn't working. It boots up fine, but when it tries to read the disc, the browser says "reading disc" for a second, then says "no data". When I open it up and watch the disc drive spin, it only spins about 1/8 of a turn then stops. Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Tsukasa #3 Posted January 3, 2005 Ok, here is the current status of my system and what has happened so far: Currently it is not working. I tried greasing the rails and cleaning the laser, but to no avail. I had opened the system to adjust the height of the laser because I was getting Disc Read Errors. I had a guide with step by step instructions, but when I got to the part about testing the different kinds of games, the PS2 refused to read any of them. The spindle motor(makes the disc spin) would turn about 1/8 of a revolution then stop. There is no evidence of friction in the spindle motor, so I assume that it is still good. I hope it's not the laser that is bad, because they are expensive to replace. If I start it up with no disc in, the spindle still only turns about 1/8 of a full turn, and I can see the laser moving up and down with it's little electromagnets. hailrazer #4 Posted January 18, 2005 Sorry but it is the Laser. I've fixed over 40 PS2's with the exact same problem. The Laser isn't seeing the disc so it doesn't send the signal for the motor to start spinning the disc up to 1x speed. Replace the laser and you will have a working PS2 again. But you might have to adjust the heighth of the Laser for it to read all media again. Also make sure you buy the right laser. Find the model # on the laser and buy the exact same one. Other models won't work even though they might fit.
