Adrian M #1 Posted December 7, 2001 I spent the two hours this evening playing through Dark Chambers with the goal of finally beating this cool game. I played my way up to Level Z which I presume is the final level and I had a score of 80,000 plus all the special weapons (gun, knife, shield). However, I found the door on level Z and it just brought me back to Level D with the same score and the same weapons. Did I beat the game? Does the game end or do you keep playing it until you die? I'm not sure if I legitamately finished the game or if I did something wrong or missed a step along the way somewhere.... Can anyone confirm?
moycon #2 Posted December 7, 2001 I too experienced this years ago... Got thru the game and was hoping for something ....Anything... Atari games sure weren't known for their endings! As far as I know it just starts over. I really liked Dark Chambers... But found it way to easy. One thing that would have made the game better in my opinion would have been the ability for the monsters to take your equipment. BTW have you played the 7800 version? It rocks also but is plagued with the same problem....Too slow/too easy. [ 12-06-2001: Message edited by: moycon ]
Adrian M #3 Posted December 7, 2001 I didnt' realize that there was a 7800 version of Dark Chambers. I have been considering getting a 5200 or a 7800, so maybe the 7800 is a better choice. It would have been nice to get a tune, message, flashing screen, etc. when I cleared Level Z. I mean, the staircase was hidden in a doorway of this rather large room, so when it brought me back to Level D, I thought perhaps I chose an incorrect door which the programmers threw in just to increase the difficulty and replayability. Ze_ro #4 Posted December 7, 2001 The 7800 version of Dark Chambers is excellent! Although it's basically Gauntlet with a different name.... And what's with starting on level D anyways? Do levels A, B, and C exist? (I suppose I should read the manual....) --Zero
Adrian M #5 Posted December 7, 2001 Levels A,B and C do exist. You just have to start the game on an easier difficulty level. A,B and C are very easy rooms loaded with lots of powerups and health potions. It was probably done this way so you can stock up on the essential items and health for the later levels. moycon #6 Posted December 7, 2001 Although it's basically Gauntlet with a different name.... [/quote ]Some one can correct me if Im wrong but I think its the other way around. Gauntlet is basically Dark Chambers with a different name because I thought Dark Chambers was released first...No?
paulvonscott #7 Posted December 9, 2001 I'm gutted, I've been playing DC a bit hoping to complete it and now I find that if I do it it will have no end. I hate games that don't end. My brother saw me playing it and pointed out that it did look like a primitive gauntlet game.

I think you're right actually... but I played Gauntlet first, so the chronological order always gets screwed up. And now for a long, pointless story: Among my friends at work, there's a guy named Wayne. He's a pretty big guy (certainly a lot bigger than me anyways), and he's kinda crude. In fact, we used to assign him a "porn level" that increased or decreased depending on stuff we found out about him doing (I won't go any farther into that). Then at work, we met a guy named Wes who works as a chef. He's really old, fairly short, and fat... plus he's even more crude than Wayne. Since we knew Wayne first, despite the fact that Wes was much older, we nicknamed Wes "Wayne Jr." Of course, the irony of the nickname was part of the fun (A similar discussion came up recently between Frogger and Freeway) --Zero
Adrian M #9 Posted December 9, 2001 IT may just be me, but I think Dark Chambers resembles Berzerk and Adventure more than Gauntlet. Even the bullets you shoot are the same small horizontal pellets that you shoot in Berzerk! Great game nonetheless! My next task is to "complete" Secret Quest. Hopefully, that one has some sort of an ending.
Albert #10 Posted December 10, 2001 Gauntlet the arcade game came out in 1985. I don't believe Dark Chambers was released until 1988, as it was introduced in an Atari Red Label package. However, there are two copyrights on the label, one is 1983 John Palevich (the game's programmer) and the other is 1988 Atari. So perhaps the game was written in 1983 and then released in 1988. Which would suggest it predated Gauntlet, at least in concept. ..Al
Adrian M #11 Posted December 10, 2001 Either that or it came out in 1983 for some sort of PC or home computer...either a C64/Vic20/Atari800/Sinclair/etc. Dark Chambers does seem like a early 80's PC-oriented game, at least that's my observation after playing through the game last week.
