Xot #4 Posted January 8, 2005 Wow. If I had to pick JUST ONE.... Final Fantasy II - SNES. Honorable Mentions would include Ultima 4 and 5 (Apple II), Secret of Mana (SNES), Dragon Warrior II, III and IV (NES), and Final Fantasy Legend and Final Fantasy Adventure (Game Boy). Famicoman #5 Posted January 8, 2005 I think...Final Fantasy 3 for the SNES.
Malc74 #6 Posted January 9, 2005 If I had to pick just one I would have to say Ultima Underworld on the PC.
bergbros2 #7 Posted January 9, 2005 Does System Shock 1 and 2 qualify as RPGs? If so, I give a shout out to this series. They are still one of the most haunting and terrfying games out there. If not, Baldur's Gate and Kotor.
Tickled_Pink #8 Posted January 9, 2005 8-bit: Ultima III & AR-The City (preferred it over The Dungeon for some reason). ST: Dungeon Master PC: Um ... Eve Online?
adams_ale #9 Posted January 9, 2005 Very tough decision............. In contention for me are: Final Fantasy II, III, VII, Chrono Trigger, and Lufia II. Final Fantasy III is my favorite rpg. Beautiful music, well woven plot, right amount of optional side quests, and great battle system.
PaulEMoz #10 Posted January 9, 2005 The Bard's Tale - C64.
SteveW #11 Posted January 9, 2005 Favorite RPG - Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast/GameCube Runner-up - Tunnels of Doom for the Texas Instruments Home Computer
desiv #12 Posted January 9, 2005 Well, early on I liked Telengard for the Vic20... Then my friend had Ultima II on his Apple II, and that was great... But, when I got Ultima IV on my C64, that was it... To me, it's just the perfect RPG, and cutting edge gameplay (as in game and story, not polygons per second. :-) ) I have to go with Ultima IV! desiv (I still have the Ankh (well, missing the straight piece on the bottom that fell off) on my keychain. Yep, the original Ankh I got with my (at the time) new copy of Ultima IV.. I have a replacement Ankh in a plastic bag with my Ultima collection, but I still carry the original..) JB #14 Posted January 9, 2005 Favorite RPG - Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast/GameCube Runner-up - Tunnels of Doom for the Texas Instruments Home Computer Mmmm, Tunnels of Doom...Wish the disk my quest editor was on hadn't failed on me... Anyways, I nominate Lunar Eternal Blue on the SegaCD. Runners up: Tales of Destiny, Valkyrie Profile, and the strategy RPG series Super Robot Wars(because I like mech anime crossovers). Atariman #15 Posted January 9, 2005 I notice a few people mentioned FFII and FFIII for the SNES - I have both of those, but for some reason I prefer FF: Mystic Quest over both of them *shields face from people spitting* I guess it is probably because it was the first FF game I had ever had a chance to play. I kinda like the fact that you can see the enemies before you attack (which I guess is kind of a no-no for hardcore FF fans) I'm guessing I'm in the minority here. gannon #16 Posted January 9, 2005 Dragon Warrior It's so annoying, but I just can't stand not playing it

nester #20 Posted January 10, 2005 Final Fantasy 2 was the game the made me love the genre. I don't often spend much time playing games I've already beaten, but I've gone through FF2 too many times to count. It's still my favorate one in the series and close to my favorate games. Shining Force 2 is probably my second favorate. One of the most underrated games of all time. I like to think of it as the NBA Jam of strategy games. It takes out the more boring elements and makes it fast paced and exciting. I wish there would be a new one on Gamecube. I'm sure they could do a good job. NE146 #21 Posted January 10, 2005 Gotta be Phantasy Star on the SMS.. as it was the first console RPG I ever played that introduced me to the genre. Incidentally Final Fantasy VII on the psx is what killed them for me to the point where I can't play them anymore
inextremis staple #22 Posted January 10, 2005 I'm guessing I'm in the minority here. Yeah, pretty much... I've played FF from 1-7 and MQ. I felt gipped that Christmas when we got MQ and after I played it. Good game to get started on but it really lacked any depth what-so-ever. Anywho, I think that my fave RPG of all time might have to be FF IV (II SNES). It was my first and I really love the story and the characters. Destiny of an Emperor and FF1 also come to mind. And how would you classify games like Zelda? I consider Zelda II (as well as Castlevania II) to be somewhat RPG-ish. You gain levels, travel about from town to town. I consider them action RPGs. What about you guys? is
DeV0 #23 Posted January 10, 2005 Hmm, so many. Fallout - PC Secret of Mana - snes zelda 1 - Nes FF6 - snes earthbound - snes Shining the Holy Ark - Saturn bards tale - c64 Pool of Radiance - c64/amiga kings quest 3 - amiga ff7 - psx blade runner - pc And most recently, fable for the xbox. A bit of a beginners RPG Imho but i kind of like it.

Add Crystalis(NES version) and Symphony of the Night to my runner-up list.
moycon #25 Posted January 10, 2005 Reading through the thread I couldn't believe more folk didnt mention Crystalis. Great game. Toss up between that and Secret Of Mana
