What kind of monitor do you use with your 8 bit?

Recommended Posts

The subject says it all. When I move to the bay area next year, I plan on buying a modded 800 to replace my dying 1200xl. What kind of monitor should I get?

I have an old Amdek Color monitor I used for the longest time - Still works great but the 25" TV I have now is a bit better :D

Still using a pair of Commodore 1702s for my old computers and game systems, though they are starting to show their age. I might switch to something else eventually, but for now they get the job done.

I was using a Commodore 1702 for a while, I like the fact that it had two jacks for chroma&lumina(s-video), but that one got left behind when I moved out of Southern California back in '99. I picked up an APPLE IIE color composite monitor at a thrift store that I was using for several years, I still have it, but I got a Commodore 1084s monitor that I've been using lately, becuase it also has the ability to display chroma&lumina for the best possible 8-bit picture. I could hook my 8-bit up to my 26" TV through either video or S-video if I wanted, but I prefer the smaller monitor becuase it's too much of a pain to have my whole system with my 2 1050's and extra periphrials all hooked up to my TV in the living room. The Apple monitor was alright, but it was just composite color, better than RF, but not nearly as good as a Commodore 1702, 1084 or other monitors capable of chroma&lumina input.

I used to use a Magnavox RGB-80. I think its basically the best composite monitor ever made, the picture is absolutely incredible. I got lucky and found one brand new in the box at a thrift store for $5.

Desk space was running a little low, so I ended up getting a Dell LCD TV that doubles as a second monitor for the PC. It has composite inputs and can overlay the Atari picture on top of the PC desktop, or go full screen with it, which is really nice. :)

Unfortunatly the LCD TV picture quality cant come close to the RGB-80. :(

Amiga 1080 monitor :)

Any of the C64 or Amiga monitors are pretty good for the Ataris.

This is a great little thread! ;)

What would be the best monitor for my XEGS? I hear a lot of you are saying the Commodore monitors? Are these ideal? I have a friend who is almost as obsesed about Amiga collecting as i am about Atari. He would be able to source an Amiga monitor for me, but... which one is best for my XEGS? :?

Also, what type of cables would i need to hook it up? I just purchased one of these:

That cable should be fine for your XEGS and a commodore monitor if your friend can hook you up, that's the way to go. What you have there (the cable) is four RCA jacks; one will be your audio, one composite video, the other two will be for hooking it up with both chroma&lumina (S-video-on-2-RCA-jacks) which most, if not all, the commodore monitors are capable of, they also generally have the composite inputs too, but why would you use that when you can hook it up S-video? Use the composite lead for some console or VCR or DVD, etc that only has composite video...Then you can have two things using the monitor. With my Commodore 184 monitor, I usually have my XE hooked up through Chroma&lumina(S-video) ports (one doubles as the composite, so I use a splitter cable) and my Genesis/32X/Segacd hooked up composite to it. I do this becuase I have my other consoles/vcr/dvd hooked up to my 26" TV through S-video, but the Segacd only displays black&white if I hook it up (artificially; composite^S-video)) to the S-video, so it's my one console I have hooked up to my computer monitor. You'll be living large with that cable and your XEGS hooked up to a commodore monitor from your friend.

I use the "old" 13" Samsung GXTV. It ahs built-in fold-out speakers on either side of the screen & a subwoofer on top in back. It has several features including special "gaming settings" (roadrace & warzone) & it handles my 7800, Dreamcast, Genesis, & Playstation as well.

I also use my C= monitors since I have about a dozen of them :) 1701/1702 most of the time, but whatever is handy when I'm setting up a system. I have to admit I don't leave an A8 set up all the time.

That cable won't work on an XEGS because it doesn't have a monitor port. The XEGS has the standard RCA outs for composite and audio.

Ahh, I didn't know that, I have a 130XE, I've never seen an XEGS in person, so I could only assume, that since Serblander bought this cable that he at least knew if it would work with the XEGS, which lead me to assume the XEGS has a standard 8-bit monitor port like the 800/800&1200XL/130XE computers do. Well, if the XEGS has standard composite prots, he'll still be able to hook it up to a commocore monitor, but just with standard composite picture...So, do the 65XE and 800XE have the monitor port? I know the 400 doesn't and I don't think the 600XL does...

All of you that use a Amiga 1080: How is the picture quality in composite? I found it was really bad compared to other C= monitors.

I also use a C=1702 and a Magnavox RGB 80.

Video output from my 1080 is excellent. It's by far the best Commodore monitor that I've owned, and I started using a 1702 in 1985.

Perhaps picture quality depends on the geographic origin of the unit. I believe that, like Atari, Commodore used a number of different models/factories to produce their monitors.

I prefer my 1080 to to the 1702, I get a clear composite picture. I use it for my Amiga, Ataris, and a variety of consoles run through an old VCR :)

I like both the 1702 and 1080 both have good quality pictures but I do notice a difference in the picture between them. Not really better or worse just different. I think it comes from the different picture tubes they use.

Actually i don't know if it will work on my XEGS as i was not at my place to check it out when i bought it. It doesn't matter though as i plan on getting a 130XE anyway. I was curious to try and the price with international shipping was quite good.

Well I am in the US, and I have tried 3 different C=A1080's and they all sucked when tested on a 800XL and 130XE, on a C=1702, 1902 and Magnavox RGB 80 the output was superior! (The output was kinda washed out/blurry on the 1080.)

I am the only one here who uses their PC's monitor?

I don't have the space for a separate monitor so I bought a TV tuner card for my PC and use this with APE. The perfect solution for me.
