MESS v.90

Recommended Posts

I just downloaded version 90 of Mess for windows and I can't run the Colecovision on it...there's a "no" symbol next to it (as there are next to most of the systems) and it says that it cannot run because the file "colecoa.rom" is not found. Any solutions to this?

Thanks!

Well... you'll need to get the file "colecoa.rom"

I'm guessing you're new to MESS... most computers and console systems have what's called a BIOS, basically a set of functions, routines, graphics and other things that are built into the system on ROM chips. You can't emulate the system without the data on those chips.

As far as I know, the BIOS's in pretty much all systems are still protected under patent law, so pirating them is just as illegal as downloading ROMS off the internet... in case that doesn't bother you, this site showed up in a web search. It's a GeoCities site, so I can't vouch for the quality, and the BIOS's there are meant for an older version of MESS, but these rarely change anyways. Check the documentation for your version of MESS to find out where to put the files so that MESS can actually find them.

Hey Zero,

Thanks for the site. I'm going to download the file and install it later. You guessed it I'm actually very new to the emulation scene. The only emulators that I've had experience with are Stella, which has been pretty easy to use thanks to this site, and Koleko which is self-contained so there's nothing to worry about.

I'll let you know how it turns out and I look forward to experiencing some of these other classic systems that went out before my time. :P
