Tempest posted reference to this picture on an Atari 2800 Japanese box

There was appaerently some concern that the American version appeared to be shooting down Japanese planes. Japanese 2800 boxes that were actually issued contained Japanese instruction books but regular English language cartridges. I bought a boxed Atari 2800 Defender from someone in Mexico that came that way. Atari likely printed special English language labels for their Japanese 2800 Air-Sea Battle cartridges so that the cartridges also did not appear to show Japanese planes being shot down.

Do other Japanese releases have artwork of this nature, or is this version of Air-Sea Battle some weird aberration?

No, AFAIK Air Sea Battle is the only odd one out of the set. I have about 12 2800 boxes and they all have US artwork.
