Stan2004.jpgAtariAge is proud to present the third annual Stan's Atari Excellence Awards! These awards were created by AtariAge member Stan Jr., to recognize those who help keep the spirit of classic Atari systems alive and well in these modern times. Last year was a particularly robust year for classic gaming, with homebrewers creating new games for the 2600 and 5200, an explosion of new hacks, the unveiling of several eye opening prototypes, and a wide assortment of new hardware to enjoy classic games in ways you never could before! Awards were given in four categories this year:

  • Homebrew of the Year
  • Hack of the Year
  • Atari Achievement Award
  • Player's Choice Award

To read about the awards and their recipients, please visit the 2004 Stan's Atari Excellence Awards page. Congratulations to everyone who's helped keep classic gaming alive!

Thanks to Stan and everyone else involved in the Atari Excellence Awards.

Wolfenstein started out as a simple graphic hack of Venture which I based on

Tim Snider's Hack Venture II: The Abysmal Abyss. I was looking for someone to add a definite ending to the game for a Wolfenstein Competition Cartridge, That is when Robert stepped in.

He definitely added an ending screen and then some. Robert worked on the game for almost a full year. The finished product is way more then I ever imagined it would be. It really is a whole new game that captures the spirit of the original 2-D Wolfenstein. Thanks Robert.

I agree. While I don't really have a passion for awards (I mean...just how do you compare things like CC2 to Stelladaptor anyway? They are equally excellent for what they do), it was equally amazing that a lowly hacker like me was up against the big guys. At least until I noticed...then I backed up and asked for a drink first ;)

Well done

Big thanks to Albert for doing his usual extraordinary work on getting this year's award ceremony up. Its a thing of beauty. Congratulations to everyone, award winners and honorable mentions and everyone else involved. I look forward to a long future of these awards, and I plan to expand the awards for next year to include some of the things people have been clamoring for!

Note to all my award recipients, please drop me a PM and let me know your award got to you safely and works, if you have not done so already. Thanks!

I hope everyone enjoys these awards as much I have enjoyed bringing them to you! Three years and going strong, who would have guessed? :) :) :)

Thanks to Stan, Albert, Dale, Thomas, and all of the voters for the Stan Awards! I was surprised and honored to have the Stelladaptor voted for the Player's Choice! Very cool. The cartridge award is sitting proudly on my "museum table" along with my Activision patches and other classic goodies.

Hmm. Now what to do to top that in 2005? ;)

Thank-you Stan and everyone involved in the creation of the awards. Thank-you Scott for having the original idea of hacking Wolfenstein into Venture, and for sharing that idea with others, especially me. I loved the original Wolfenstein games, and I was truly inspired by your programming challenge in the Contest forum.

Congratulations to all the other winners.

Cheers!

A lot of great projects were done last year. Thanks to Stan for taking on the difficult task of selecting a few to be highlighted.

I enjoyed contributing to the awards this year, but I didn't do it alone. Dennis Debro, Thomas Jentzsch, Andrew Davie, and Eckhard Stolberg all helped directly or indirectly. Thanks!

Congratulations to the award recipients!

Thanks for putting these awards together Stan! I look forward to reading them each year. It's kind of a throwback, in a way, to some of articles Electronic Games used to run - their video game hall of fame, annual "Arcade Awards", and such. Very cool to have something like this, and very well deserved for all of the winners (and nominees). It's a nice addition to the community, and I hope it's a tradition that carries on for a long time.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Hi there!

Ooops I did it again! :D

All I can say is wow! Stan, Albert, Dale, Thomas & Zach: You guys rock! Everyone involved in the ceremony has outdone himself this year, everyone went an extra mile, really amazing!

I'm sorry Dennis. Climber 5 is the homebrew *I* enjoyed the most this year ;)

And I have to thank Paul for *not* releasing Homestar Runner this year

Congratulations and thanks also to the other winners. I enjoyed participating in the HSC, I enjoy using my Stelladaptor and I enjoy playing Wolfenstein!

Greetings,

Manuel

Let me preface this post by stating clearly that I am in no way complaining. I just want to share my sorry lot in life. ;)

I am cursed with a last name that no one can spell the same twice. Its unnatural or something. Notice, on the award cartridge label, my last name is spelled correctly "Mundschau", but on the Awards webpage it is spelled "Mundshau", and when I plug in the award cartridge it is spelled "Mundshcau" on the screen.

This is not a new problem for me. I get several items of mail each month with my name spelled wrong. The worst ever was "Mundochair". Telemarketers struggle to pronounce it. Its a little thing that gives my wife an I some entertainment.

Just so I am clear. I love the award as it is. I thank everyone who contributed to it, but you might need to see a Voodoo specialist or something because you have all clearly fallen under the curse of Mundshau... er, Mundshcau, er. Mundschau. Booga Booga. :D

Cheers!

I have fixed the spelling on the Hack of the Year page, and it was (amazingly) spelled correctly on the main awards page. If Zach can make a new version of the Hack Award binary, I will send you a new cartridge. :)

I can sympathize with you, as my last name (Yarusso) is very often misspelled and brutalized. Pretty much every time I have to give my name to someone where they have to write it down or type it into a computer, I have to spell it out or it'll end up as "Yarrusso", "Yarasso", "Yorusso", or one of fifty other variants I've seen over the years. I will say that your name is worse, though. :)

Herr Mundschau,

As someone who has had a brief education in the German language and culture, I doubt that I'll misspell your name.

For those who don't know it, "Mundschau" is a nonsense compound word. These types of surnames are quite common in German-speaking countries. Robert's last name translates literally as "mouthshow". These odd names were usually formed many generations ago, when the tradition was for marrying couples to create new surnames by combining all or parts of those of both spouses.

Gruess!

Same problem here, I am always amazed when I still find new "creative" misspellings of my name.

Fortunately most of my Atari friends have learned the correct spelling by now. So, just give them some time (and maybe change your member name). :)

Or come to Germany, there you won't have any problems with your name. :D

Robert, sincerest apologies as the error is mine. I thought I had double and triple checked everything and I guess I just missed this one. I apologize. If Albert is willing and Zach is able, I greatly hope to rectify this error.

:( :( :( :( :(

But don't feel isolated, the first year I got Mike Mika's name wrong too. And I still have to look up Thomas's name when I try to spell it. ;) :D

Again, I apologize for the error and I hope we can set it right.
