Stingray #1 Posted February 5, 2005 I have a Neo Geo MVS Captain Tomaday cart that has no sound. Tried the old standby: clean the cart contacts. No joy. Opened the cart up, saw nothing unusual. Anyone know anything about these things? Didn't really have any luck trying to Google up repair tips. Pretty much everthing I came with was relating to Neo-Geo MAME roms that play with no sound. -S
Ze_ro #2 Posted February 6, 2005 I've often had AES games play without sound when they were dirty or not fully inserted... but it seems like you've already explored that option, so all I can recommend is perhaps to try harder at cleaning the cartridge and cartridge slot (If you have a multi-slot MVS, perhaps try a different slot?). If worst comes to absolute worst, I've managed to save cartridges in the past by cleaning the contacts with sandpaper... but that's more of a last-ditch effort if nothing else seems to work. --Zero
Cassidy Nolen #3 Posted February 7, 2005 I have seen plenty of no-sound MVS boards. I suppose its possible that the damage to an MVS board could have damaged the sound data/cart. Possible, but not likely. As you know, but others may not, a mulit-Neo (4 and above) are not exactly JAMMA compatible. There are differences in the audio output section. If you try to run a 4 slot board in a JAMMA harness, you can do some damage. The audio section is the area that catches the brunt of it all. Have not heard of it damaging a cart, but its possible. If a game REALLY has bad contacts, I have been known to use very fine (like 0000) steel wool across the contacts (even done 2600 carts that way!). Might be worth a try. Sandpaper is the end-all "thats all I got left" solution. I usually flow solder over contacts that I have done that to (sort of re-tin the contacts). bark40oz #4 Posted February 7, 2005 did you check to see if its a boot? open it up and see if theres any shady soldering anywhere, if your using a multi slot try it in one of the others, insert the game in all the way. if that doesnt work dont insert it all the way, give it a wiggle or two. mvs games are notorious for being bootlegs. bark40oz #5 Posted February 7, 2005 oh yeah also if your useing a standard jamma setup it wont have sound at all check out this site www.hardmvs.com it will have the correct wiring for the harnass for the neo, also try the great bob roberts he is a god among men when it comes to arcade games. his site is www.therealbobroberts.com. good luck
Stingray #6 Posted February 7, 2005 Well thanks for the suggestions, but so far there's nothing there that I haven't already tried. Cleaned the contacts every way I can think of. Swapped it to the other slot. As you know, but others may not, a mulit-Neo (4 and above) are not exactly JAMMA compatible. There are differences in the audio output section. If you try to run a 4 slot board in a JAMMA harness, you can do some damage. The audio section is the area that catches the brunt of it all. Mine is a two slot, is this a problem with that board? did you check to see if its a boot? open it up and see if theres any shady soldering anywhere, If it's a bootleg it's a very good one. It still had the factory seals on the cart before I broke them when I opened it. Everything on the borad looks to be factory soldered. I didn't see any cold solder points or anything that looked burned or like it had a Coke spilled on it. The contacts were nice & shiny, but I went ahead and gave them a good cleaning while I had it apart anyway. oh yeah also if your useing a standard jamma setup it wont have sound at all check out this site www.hardmvs.com it will have the correct wiring for the harnass for the neo Not sure what you mean here, but to clarify, I have about a dozen games, and this is the only one with no sound. AFAIK, this machine was converted to MVS from standard JAMMA. -S
Stingray #7 Posted February 7, 2005 Oh, one more important point that I should have already mentioned. When I bought this cart the guy I got it from told me that the sound wasn't working, so I do know that problem with it isn't specific to my machine. -S
Cassidy Nolen #8 Posted February 7, 2005 2 slot board is JAMMA as well, IIRC. Its the 4 and 6 thats different. Sounds like you just have a dud cart, bro. A operator I work with sells off his stuff pretty reasonably priced. If you would like his number, PM me. Only carts I have are out making money Cassidy
Stingray #9 Posted February 7, 2005 Ah well, I was hoping that it might be a known issue that I'd be able to fix. -S
Flack #10 Posted February 8, 2005 I got nothing to add to all of that. I've had two games so far that had problems -- my Double Dragon cart originally didn't have sound, and my Blazing Star cart had scrambled graphics. Both were fixed with alcohol and a q-tip. Stingray #11 Posted February 8, 2005 Yeah, I had a 3 Count Bout with no sound, but that one was fixed by a good cleaning. I guess Captian T will just have to remain dumb. -S
