Jaguar and CD-R's - your experiences please! (For new games)

Hello,

Please read this - YOUR message will help if you used a CD-R!

I just want to know, to help everybody making new games...

1) Can your Jag CD read a CD-R OK?

a) An audio CD backup on CD-R?

b) A Jag CD game backup on CD-R?

c) A homebrew or beta release on CD-R? (e.g. BIWN CD)

2) If so, what brand of CD-R will it read?

a) What colour media - silver, gold, green, etc?

b) High reflectivity, etc.? Can you see "the data" easily?

3) What CD writer did you use? (Make and model please)

(Also what speed did you burn the Jag-CD at successfully?)

4) Any burning/backup software you recommend.

Of course some people may say "don't say" because it will

encourage piracy, but I think pirates will pirate in any case.

5) What software you have bought on CD-R and if it read OK.

e.g. Ocean Depths, a BIWN or American hero beta,

or the original CD-R release for Jag-CD, Iron Soldier II CD.

I wrote a successful "NUON homebrew burning guide", I'd like to

help create a similar guide for future developers for the Jaguar.

Cheers,

JustClaws.

Hi JustClaws !

I have two JagCDs which I will refer to as unit A and B in this post.

1) All the mentioned discs work with my unit A, but unit B only reads them if they are on light colored media.

2)

a) unit A seems to have no problems with different colors. I tried light almost original looking discs, black media, dark blue media, dark green media and light green ones.

My unit B only seems to read original discs and bright ones like the light green ones.

b)

My unit A reads both. unit B does not read the black ones (you can't see any data on it), but dark green ones where you can see the data very well don't work either.

3) I am using a Yamaha CRW-F1 writer. I could burn JagCDs sucessfully when doing debugging and things need to go fast at full speed (44x), but I use 2x speed to be sure it works.

4) NTI CD MAKER

5) I have all of the mentioned releases and they all work on my drives except for BIWN, which only works on unit A.

However on Euro JagFest 2004 I tried the Extremist Packs on the CD unit of Björn and they hardly ever booted.

I don't really remember the media color, but I think it was light green as well.

Regards, Lars.

It took me 2 years of Web searching to get all the data on how to make a working backup for the JagCD ;) and the URl with most the info is not up any more :x The JagCD is a MultiSession Discs that is the key here, ;) with the new CDRW's drives and DVDRW's drives that is not a problem ;) I use any color disk with no problem and I use the X2 burn the Jag-CD's.

Software recommend is CloneCD 3.3.4.1 :ahoy: If your drive can use it! :ahoy:

Thanks for the input Walter, its probably more suited to the backup thread though.

I think what Richard was trying to find out with this one is why people are having difficulties with 'SOME@ homebrew programs on CD-R and thus, by pooling the information try to determine how best to eliminate such problems in future.

1) Can your Jag CD read a CD-R OK? - YES

a) An audio CD backup on CD-R? - YES

b) A Jag CD game backup on CD-R? - N/A (Not tested)

c) A homebrew or beta release on CD-R? (e.g. BIWN CD) - YES (including Black release of BIWN)

2) If so, what brand of CD-R will it read? - Imation/Memorex/Dysan tested

a) What colour media - silver, gold, green, etc? - GREEN/BLACK/SILVER tested

b) High reflectivity, etc.? Can you see "the data" easily? - YES

3) What CD writer did you use? (Make and model please) - SAF x2

(Also what speed did you burn the Jag-CD at successfully?)

4) Any burning/backup software you recommend. - CD RECORD

Well, I know we talked about this a bit Justclaws, but I'll reiterate: Yes to everything. I've not had any problems getting anything to work except a few CD-R's I've made myslef and they were bad burns, after re-burning properly, they worked fine. I have been 100% successful with all unencrypted discs, whether commercial releases or ones I burned or had burned for me when using Protector:S.E.'s JagFree bypass. I have been about 75% successful with BSG's JugsDD bypass, several discs won't load with it at all and they load fine with JagFree. Everything I use is NTSC, it seems that more people have had problems who have PAL stuff than those that have NTSC stuff.

Oh, the CDR's I have are either light-colored or black, and both types work. I have not other colors for my cdr discs on Jaguar stuff yet. IS2 CDR is sort of a real light olive-green type color (the original direct from Eclipse) and it also always worked fine. I have a back-up of it that works fine too, so a CDR copy of a CDR also works on my system.

HEy Richard, here my answers if they help in any way.

1) Can your Jag CD read a CD-R OK?

a) An audio CD backup on CD-R? >Never had Problems with audio cd's.

b) A Jag CD game backup on CD-R? > My backups work, but they have some glitches which are not in the original versions. Like artifacts in the videos of IS2.

c) A homebrew or beta release on CD-R? (e.g. BIWN CD) > Everything worked fine with the exception of BL on JAy's extremist pack which would always crash and Lars video of Jagfest which played one time right and then always crashed at the same time.

2) If so, what brand of CD-R will it read?

a) What colour media - silver, gold, green, etc? Well gotta take a look at JAys's and Lars cd otherwise it reads everything.

b) High reflectivity, etc.? Can you see "the data" easily?

3) What CD writer did you use? (Make and model please)

(Also what speed did you burn the Jag-CD at successfully?)

I use a plextor 12X bruner with clone cd or alcohol 120

4) Any burning/backup software you recommend.

Of course some people may say "don't say" because it will

encourage piracy, but I think pirates will pirate in any case.

Well clone cd worked fine most of the time

5) What software you have bought on CD-R and if it read OK.

e.g. Ocean Depths, a BIWN or American hero beta,

or the original CD-R release for Jag-CD, Iron Soldier II CD.

IS2 CD-r, works fine, all the extremist packs except BL, American hero, BIWN, all works.

Peter
