Sonic Adventure DX - Better than I thought

Recommended Posts

I always resisted buying this for Cube (the Director's Cut) unitl recently when I found it so cheap I couldn't pass it up.

I really liked Sonic Adventure 2, but found it sort of clumsy at times and a bit buggy. Naturally I though SA DX would be even worse, seeing that it's older, and it sort of is don't get me wrong, but DAMN is it fun!

I spent 2 hours playing the NiGHTS pinball in the casino alone! Mos tof the stages were all kinds of fun and I found myself eagerly replaying them to get more emblems.

I finished the game so far with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, but don't have much interest in the other 3, rather obscure characters (unless it unlocks something :ponder: ) The way all their stories weave together though is pretty cool I think. SA DX definitely gets a  from me. Mad fun!

The final boss.

Out of the other three I thought the best one was Gamma (E-102) levels. Amys levels were so damn slow. Big levels.......ugh.

This was the DC version, but I doubt much was changed.

This is just it. Fish for Froggy? No thanks. I've had a great experience with the 3 main guys, but playing as a big stupid fishing cat is just not fun and it's just not Sonic to me.

Sonic Adventure is a much better game than Sonic Adventure 2, period.

You're certainly not alone in that opinion.

I would say give the other three characters, even Big, at least one play-through. You'll at least learn more of the overall story, and like bruser_inc said, this is the only way to see the final boss of the game.

In DX you can unlock the game gear games depending on how many emblems you get/missions you complete.

Bigs levels are a pain they take for ever and are boring to boot.

I don't know if the DX version corrected it, but the Big levels on the DC were glitchy as all get out.. I felt at the time that they were sort of half thought out and only thrown in to make the game longer... Now that I am thinking about it.. I recall that it is not really the levels that are glitchy but the Big model and how it interacts with the environments... you can get him to stand sideways on a rock in a way that he is twitching frantically.

I still loved Sonic Adventure though...

All that bitching (that you still see..) about the camera didn't start until closer to the US release, by then I had already played through the Japanese version twice and it didn't bother me enough to raise a stink about it.

I spent a lot of time doing the speed trials on the first few levels...

Yeah, thats it fish for Froggy. Oh, once in a while you have you kill an enemy, so you don't get killed while fishing. Though what skunkworx said, give the other three a once through. The final boss is worth it. Plus, the song kicks ass.

Fuck man, if there is one outstanding feature that makes this game great, it'd be the music. Sonic games have always had a near perfect (if excessively goofy) soundtrack. Hats off to the composers.

I actually preferred SA2. Especially Pumpkin Hill. The fighting freak Knuckles flying around in a dark and gloomy halloween-like world.

I dunno. SA1 just seemed to confuse me more.

It can be confusing for sure. Can't count how many times I had to find that glowing orb so I would know where to go.

So, thanks to everyone who encouraged me to finish, I went back and finished the other 3 stories (even Big) and unlokced the final story. Awesome stuff. The final battle is sooo fast! It's a good thing I had gove back to the game also, because finishing Amy, Big and Gamma pushed me over the top past 60 emblems and unlocked another GameGear title.

I never did get throung bigs levels i wish i did now. :(

Same here - I still have the saves and such I'm sure for SA1, but the Bigs levels are the only ones I never got. I got stuck with some crappy lure and could never find the upgrade and could never reel the fish in to complete whatever level I got stuck on.

I blew through the rest of the game though. I wish I owned SA2... :)

Big's got an upgrade?!  Please tell me where!

I'm not sure if it's the fishing pole upgrade, but there's one power-up under Big's home in the jungle. You'll see the light peeking out from under the wooden deck. Big can pick up the deck to get to the power-up.

Yeah, there's a few. I managed to grab 2 lure upgrades and a floating belt thing and I never though to check in the jungle.

The belt is inside the ice cave, one of the lures is in the ice stage, but I can't remember where that other lure came from...

So anyone got any thoughts on Sonic Heroes? I've had it for a while, but haven't busted it out yet.

Ugh i hate sonic heroes i gave it a really good shot to plaed it on all 3 systems and its bad on all of them. The levels are just badly put together especialy that rail level. Also the controls feel awfuly slippery its a shame because other then that it could have been a lot of fun.

The best reviews said it was "okay at best," so I'm waiting until the price goes down real cheap...even auction sites are expensive. I would like to give it a shot though because Sonic Adventure 2 Battle didn't get too great of reviews compared to SA1 and I prefer it.

I like some levels of the game but that damn rail level is just impossible to like and that stupid hounted house one. But on the flip side emerald hills has never been better.

Music?!? I stopped liking the music when the Sonic series switched to CD. Not only is it loud, but it's so loud it's obnoxious. On top of that they dont even let you turn it off. Kind like the supermonkey ball series.

That being said I'd say the Adventure DX is better than Sonic Adventure 2 battle. I'm kinda half and half on heroes.

Oh and for old school Sonic goodness the Sonic games for the gameboy advance are pretty good.

This just got cheap if anyone cares. I picked it up long ago and am getting into it now. So far I'd dare say I prefer it to Adventure 1 or 2 - some cool team-up mechanics and huge levels that are laid out more like classic Sonic games minus the stupid adventure elements like carrying keys around and such.

So far this game is jsut a blast and with top notch music as always
